하나님의 이름이 거룩히 여김 받게 하옵소서 (마6:9)

·‘이름이 거룩히 여김 받으시오며’ 라는 기도는 하나님의 이름이 거룩한 이름이 되게 해달라고 구하는 것이 아니라, 이미 거룩하신 하나님의 이름이 나를 통해 세상 가운데서 합당한 대우를 받게 해달라는 기도이다.    *이름은 그 사람의 인격과 존재를 표현한 것

1) 이미 거룩하신 하나님이 우리를 통해 거룩하신 분으로 대접받게 해달라는 의미다. 

·사람들이 교만해서 하나님의 이름을 함부로 모욕하고 하나님의 이름을 훼방하기도 하지만, 그렇다고 하나님 편에서 자기 이름이 더럽혀 질까봐 조바심을 낼 이유는 없다. 하나님은 당신의 거룩과 영광이 함부로 짓밟히게 내버려 두지도 않으실 뿐 아니라, 그 문제를 불안해 할 만큼 불완전한 분이 아니기 때문이다. 

·하나님의 이름이 거룩히 여김 받도록 하는 것이 얼마나 중요한 것인가는 모세가 므리바 샘에서 지팡이로 반석을 두 번 쳤다가 가나안 땅에 들어가지 못하게 된 사건을 통해 알 수 있다. 

·모세가 광야 생활이 끝나갈 때까지도 여전히 불평하는 이스라엘을 보며 감정을 절제하지 못하고 반석을 두 번 지팡이로 친 행위에 대해 하나님은 ‘너희가 나를 믿지 못한 까닭에 나의 영광을 온전히 드러내지 못했다’고 말씀하셨다.(민20:12)  

2-1) 하나님의 이름이 거룩하게 여김 받게 하는 것은 먼저 자신이 하나님께 항상 최선의 것을 드리는 것을 통해서 나타난다. 

·우리가 하나님을 함부로 생각하면 세상 사람들도 하나님을 쉽게 생각할 것이요, 우리가 최선의 것으로 하나님을 상대하면 세상의 사람들도 하나님을 존귀한 존재로 인정할 것이다. 반대로 우리가 주일 예배를 소홀히 여기면서 신앙 생활을 하면 우리가 아무리 입술로 하나님이 귀중한 분이라고 말해도 이미 아이들은 하나님이 소중하지 않은 분이라고 생각한다. 

*히브리어 יהוה, (YHWH / 야훼) 대신, ‘나의 주라는 뜻을 가진  אֲדֹנָי (Adonai) 를 쓰는 이유

·우리가 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지이신 하나님의 이름을 존중히 여긴다면, 우리의 최선의 시간, 최선의 것들을 하나님께 드리는 것은 마땅한 것이다. 오늘날 서구 교회가 몰락하게 된 출발은 주일을 지키는 것을 소홀히 여긴 데서 시작된 것이다. 휴가가 잡히면 예배를 빠지는 것은 당연한 일이 되어 있고, 주일날 진행되는 액티비티에 아이들 데려가느라 부모까지 예배를 빠진다. 

·팬더믹 이후 오늘날 성도들은 온라인 예배가 습관화 되어 있다. 그러나 함께 모여 예배할 때 하나님의 능력이 나타난다. 집에서 혼자 예배 드려서는 좀처럼 하나님의 능력을 경험할 수 없다.(히10:25)   *주일을 빠지고 신혼 여행을 가려 했다가 목사님께 혼난 이야기 

2-2) 주님 닮은 삶이 우리의 삶에 나타날 때 하나님의 이름이 거룩히 여김을 받는다. 

·성도들이 삶 속에서 착한 행실을 나타낼 때 하나님의 이름이 거룩히 여김 받고, 하나님의 영광이 나타나게 된다.(마5:16; 고전10:33) 

·이삭은 블레셋과 우물로 다툴 때 항상 손해보고 양보했다. 하나님께서 지키실 것을 믿고 계속해서 양보하니까 하나님이 함께 하시는 사람이라는 것을 하나님이 친히 보여주신 것이다. 그리고 그러다 보니 블레셋도 이삭을 함부로 못하고 자기와 화친을 맺자고 한 것이었다.(창26:28) 

·결국 하나님의 이름을 거룩히 여김 받게 하려고 참고 인내하고 손해봐 주면 그것 때문에 내 인생이 망하는 것이 아니라 오히려 더 잘 되게 되어 있다. 

·사실 좋은 일만 아니라 좋지 않은 일도 하나님의 간섭 하에 일어난 일이다.(사45:7) 때로 우리는 그렇게 하시는 하나님의 뜻을 온전히 알 수 없지만, 분명한 것은 그 일을 통해서 하나님의 선한 뜻을 이루신다는 것이다. 

2-3) 주께서 내게 은혜 베푸실 때에 나도 주님의 이름을 높여드리는 것이 그분의 이름을 거룩히 여김받게 하는 일이다. 

·하나님께서 은혜 베푸실 때, 자신의 지혜와 능력으로 성취한 것인 양 오만한 마음을 갖지 말아야 한다. 누군가가 나를 칭찬하면 곧바로 하나님께 영광을 돌려야 한다. 또 하나님이 나에게 무엇인가 축복을 허락하셨다면, 우리는 그것들을 내 자신만을 위해서 쓰려하기 보다는 하나님의 영광을 나타내는 데 쓰여져야 한다.

·하나님이 아프게 하실 때마다 깨닫게 하시는 것이 있었다. 내 힘으로 할 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없다는 것이었다. 감사한 것은 그런 인생의 위기가 올 때 겸손하게 고백하고 있으니까 희한하게 사역의 길이 열리고, 사역의 지경을 더 넓혀주셨다. 

·거룩히 여김을 받으시라는 것은 내가 당신의 이름을 거룩하게 하겠으니 그것을 허락해 달라는 뜻이 아니라, 하나님만이 그 자신의 이름을 거룩하게 하실 수 있다는 겸손한 고백이며 그 일이 나를 통해 이루어지도록 도와 주시라는 기도이다. 

*거룩히 여김을 받는다(ἁγιασθήτω/ 하가스태토) 는 단어는 ἁγιάζω(하가조)라는 동사의 수동태 명령형 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 하나님의 이름이 거룩히 여김 받도록 할 수 있는 기도 세가지를 설명해보라. 

2) 세가지 기도 중에 내가 가장 많이 해야 하는 기도는 어떤 기도일 지 나누어보고, 이를 위해 어떤 결단들을 하게 되었는 지 나누어보자. 

May God’s Name Be Hallowed (Matthew 6:9)

·The prayer, “Hallowed be Your name,” is not a request that God’s name would become holy. Rather, it is a prayer that the name of God, who is already holy, would receive the honor it deserves in the world through my life.

*“Name” represents a person’s character and very being.

1) It means asking that God, who is already holy, would be treated as holy through us.

·People may arrogantly dishonor God’s name and even blaspheme His name, but God does not need to be anxious that His name might be defiled. God is not only One who will never allow His holiness and glory to be carelessly trampled upon; He is also not an imperfect being who would feel threatened by such a matter.

·We can see how important it is for God’s name to be hallowed through the incident at the waters of Meribah, where Moses struck the rock twice with his staff and, as a result, was not allowed to enter the land of Canaan.

·Near the end of the wilderness journey, Moses saw that the Israelites were still complaining. Unable to control his emotions, he struck the rock twice with his staff. In response, God said, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites,” Moses had failed to fully reveal God’s glory. (Numbers 20:12)

2-1) God’s name is hallowed first when we always give Him our very best.

·If we treat God casually, people in the world will also think lightly of God. But if we approach God with our very best, people in the world will also recognize Him as One worthy of honor. On the other hand, if we live our faith while neglecting Sunday worship, then no matter how much we say with our lips that God is precious, our children will already have concluded that God is not truly precious to us.  *The reason Jews use אֲדֹנָי (Adonai), meaning “my Lord,” instead of pronouncing the Hebrew name יהוה (YHWH / Yahweh).

·If we truly honor the name of our Father in heaven, then it is only right that we offer our best time and our best things to God. The decline of the Western church began when people started neglecting the keeping of the Lord’s Day. When vacation plans are made, missing worship has become something taken for granted. And when children have Sunday activities, even parents miss worship in order to take them there.

·Since the pandemic, many believers have become accustomed to online worship. But God’s power is revealed when we gather together in worship. It is very difficult to experience the power of God when we worship alone at home. (Hebrews 10:25)  *The story of being rebuked by a pastor for planning to miss Sunday worship in order to go on a honeymoon.

2-2) God’s name is hallowed when a Christlike life is revealed in our daily lives.

·When believers show good deeds in their lives, God’s name is hallowed, and His glory is revealed. (Matthew 5:16; 1 Corinthians 10:33)

·When Isaac had conflicts with the Philistines over wells, he consistently yielded and accepted loss. Because he kept yielding, trusting that God would protect him, God Himself showed that Isaac was a man with whom He was present. As a result, even the Philistines could no longer treat Isaac carelessly, and they came to make a covenant of peace with him. (Genesis 26:28)

·In the end, when we endure, persevere, and accept loss in order that God’s name may be hallowed, our lives do not collapse because of it. Rather, God causes things to turn out even better.

·In fact, not only good things but also difficult things happen under God’s sovereign involvement. (Isaiah 45:7) At times, we may not fully understand God’s purpose in allowing such things, but one thing is clear: through them, God accomplishes His good will.

2-3) When the Lord shows me grace, I must also lift up His name; this is how His name is hallowed.

·When God shows us grace, we must not become arrogant as though we achieved everything by our own wisdom and ability. When someone praises us, we must immediately give glory to God. And if God has allowed certain blessings in our lives, we should not try to use them only for ourselves. Rather, they should be used to reveal the glory of God.

·There was something God made me realize every time He allowed me to go through painful moments: there is nothing I can do by my own strength. What I am thankful for is that when those crises came and I humbly confessed this before God, strangely, doors of ministry opened, and God expanded the territory of my ministry.

·The prayer, “May Your name be hallowed,” does not mean, “I will make Your name holy, so please allow me to do it.” Rather, it is a humble confession that only God can hallow His own name, and it is a prayer asking Him to help that work be accomplished through me.  *“be hallowed” is ἁγιασθήτω (hagiasthētō), the passive imperative form of the verb ἁγιάζω (hagiazō).
