  장애물 돌파하기 (고후12:7-10)

 

· 사람은 상황과 시기가 다를 뿐 누구나 자신의 힘으로는 아무 것도 할 수 없는 장애물을 직면하게 될 때가 있다. 성경에 기록된 위대한 하나님의 사람들 역시 마찬가지였다. 그들의 인생에서도 자신의 힘으로 어찌할 수 없는 장애물 앞에 놓인 경험들이 있었다.

· 바울은 두 가지 장애가 있었다. 하나는 육체의 가시였다. 질병이 있었다는 뜻이다. 학자들은 그 병이 안질이나 간질일 것이라 추측하기도 한다. 중요한 것은 어떤 병인 지가 아니라 그 병이 바울의 삶에 큰 걸림돌이 되었지만 당시 의학으로는 고칠 수 없었다는 점이다. 같은 기도를 세 번이나 했다는 것은 그 고통이  너무 고통스러웠다는 말이다. 

· 또 한 가지는 환경적 장애였다. 그는 가는 곳마다 핍박을 당하고 죽을 고비를 넘겼다. (고후11:23-27) 그야말로 수고하며 애쓰는 가운데 자지 못했고 굶고 춥고 헐벗었다고 한다. 이런 것은 바울에게 주어진 상황이었으나 자신의 힘으로 바꿀 수 없는 어찌할 수 없는 장애물들이었다. 

 

1) 나의 환경을 은혜로 바라보아야 한다.

· 우리의 기도에 대한 응답으로 환경이 바뀌는 것은 은혜다. 그러나 환경이 변하지 않아도 지금 처한 그 자체가 은혜라고 깨닫기 시작하면 장애물은 극복된다. 

· 이 응답을 들은 후 바울에겐  더 이상 그 문제가 장애가 되지 않았다. 성경 어디에도 병이 나았다는 기록이 없지만 바울은 그 이후 그 문제를 위해 기도한 적이 없다. 환경은 그대로 였지만 그것을 은혜로 받아들인 순간, 더 이상 장애물이 아니었기 때문이다.

· 우리가 믿는 하나님은 너무 좋으신 분이시다. 내가 지쳐 쓰러지면 안고서 가시는 분이시다. 그렇게 좋은 분이 어떤 때는 내가 너무 힘들어서 밤잠을 못 이루고 눈물 흘리며 기도하는데 내 소리를 못들은 척 하시는 것 같을 때가 있다. 그럴 때 주님의 음성을 들어야 한다. ‘내 은혜가 네게 족하다’       *정호승 시인의 ‘내 등에 짐이 없었다면’

 

2) 약할 때 주님의 강함이 나타난다.

· 우리의 능력이 제한 되어야만 하나님의 능력이 더 잘 드러난다. 하나님께 필요한 것은 우리의 강함이 아니라 오히려 약함이다. 하나님의 위대한 역사는 내가 강하다고 여길 때 이루어지지 않는다. 하나님은 인간의 약함을 통해 일하시기 때문이다.

  *아무 것도 할 수 없다고 하는 모세에게 내가 할 것이라 말씀하신 하나님 

· 아무것도 할 수 없는 존재라고 여겨질 때, 모든 것을 포기할 때가 하나님이 역사하시는 때이다. 하나님의 방식은 모든 약함이 사라지는 것이 아니다. 내 능력이 한계에 이른 상황에서 하나님이 내 약함을 어떻게 쓰시는지 발견하게 하시기 때문이다.

· 그러나 사람들은 자신의 약함을 인정하고 받아들이는 것이 아니라 강해지고자 한다. 그래서 어떻게든 내 힘으로 장애물을 극복하려고 한다. 내 능력의 한계를 경험하지 않고 하나님의 능력을 체험할 수 없다. 하나님이 바라시는 것은 우리가 스스로 나약함을 극복하는 것이 아니라 그 나약함을 통해 하나님이 일하시는 것을 드러내는 것이다.

·  우리는 강해질 이유도 없고 그럴 필요도 없다. 강하게 해달라고 기도하지 않아도 된다. 연약해도 상관없기 때문이다. 나의 약함을 통해 주님의 강함이 드러나기만 하면 되기 때문이다. 

· 우리는 거대한 바위 같은 세상을 향해 매일 나아간다. 내가 계란 같이 약한 존재라고 두려워할 이유가 없다. 하나님이 나를 들어 던지시면 바위가 깨진다. 약함을 두려워 말고 나의 약함을 통해 드러날 주님의 강함을 기대하며 살아가야 한다.

 

 

 

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 바울이 자신의 약함을 자랑한다고 말하게 된 이유는 무엇인지 설명해보라.

2) 사람들이 강해져야 한다고 생각하는 이유가 무엇일 지 말해보고, 나는 지금 강해지려고 하고 있지는 않는 지, 오히려 약함 속에서도 하나님의 일하실 것을 기대하고 있는 지 나누어보자.

3) 실제로 자신의 삶 속에서 약할 때 강함 되신 주님을 경험하게 된 것이 있다면  나누어보라.  

Breaking Through Obstacles (2 Corinthians 12:7–10)

· Although the circumstances and timing may differ, everyone eventually faces obstacles that cannot be overcome by human strength alone. The great men and women of God recorded in the Bible were no exception. They also encountered obstacles in their lives that they could not overcome by their own strength.

· Paul faced two major obstacles. One was the thorn in his flesh, which indicates that he suffered from some kind of physical illness. Some scholars speculate that it may have been an eye disease or epilepsy. What matters, however, is not the exact nature of the illness. The important point is that it became a serious hindrance in Paul’s life, yet it could not be cured by the medical knowledge available at that time. The fact that Paul prayed three times for the same thing shows how severe and painful his suffering was.

· The other obstacle was related to his circumstances. Wherever Paul went, he was persecuted and repeatedly faced death. According to 2 Corinthians 11:23–27, he labored and struggled, went without sleep, experienced hunger and thirst, and suffered from cold and lack of clothing. These were the circumstances given to Paul, yet they were obstacles that he could not change by his own strength.

 

1) We Must See Our Circumstances Through the Lens of Grace

· It is grace when our circumstances change in response to our prayers. However, even when our circumstances do not change, we begin to overcome our obstacles when we realize that the circumstances in which we now find ourselves are also part of God’s grace.

· After Paul received this answer from the Lord, the problem was no longer an obstacle to him. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that his illness was healed, yet Paul never again prayed for that problem to be removed. His circumstances remained unchanged, but the moment he accepted them as grace, they were no longer an obstacle. * losing his earthly father at an early age led him to discover that he had a perfect heavenly Father.

· The God in whom we believe is exceedingly good. When we become exhausted and collapse, He carries us in His arms. Yet sometimes, even though He is so good, we may be unable to sleep because of our suffering and cry out to Him with tears, only to feel as though He does not hear us. At such times, we must listen for the voice of the Lord: “My grace is sufficient for you.”  *Jeong Ho-seung “If I Had No Burden on My Back.”

 

2) The Lord’s Strength Is Revealed When We Are Weak

· God’s power is revealed more clearly when our own abilities are limited. What God needs is not our strength, but rather our weakness. God’s great works are not accomplished when we believe that we are strong, because God works through human weakness. 

· The moment we realize that we can do nothing and come to the end of ourselves is often the very moment when God begins to work. God’s way is not always to remove every weakness from our lives. Instead, when we reach the limits of our own abilities, He enables us to discover how He can use our weakness.

· However, rather than acknowledging and accepting their weakness, people desire to become strong. They try by every possible means to overcome their obstacles through their own strength. Yet we cannot experience the power of God without first encountering the limitations of our own abilities. God does not simply want us to overcome our weakness by ourselves. He wants His work to be revealed through our weakness.  

· We have no reason to become strong, nor do we need to be strong. We do not even have to pray that God would make us strong. It is all right to be weak, because what truly matters is that the strength of the Lord be revealed through our weakness.

· Every day, we move forward against a world that seems as solid and immovable as a massive rock. Even though we may feel as fragile as an egg, we do not need to be afraid. When God takes us in His hand and throws us, the rock will shatter. Therefore, we must not fear our weakness. Instead, we must live in expectation of the strength of the Lord that will be revealed through our weakness.

 

Questions for Study and Application

1)Explain why Paul came to say that he would boast in his weaknesses.

2)Discuss why people believe they must become strong. Am I currently trying to make myself strong, or am I expecting God to work even in the midst of my weakness?

3)Share an experience from your own life in which you encountered the Lord as your strength when you were weak.
