  그리스도의 좋은 군사 (딤후2:3-6)

 

· 오늘날 그리스도인들이 주의 일을 감당하려고 할 때 사탄은 절대 가만히 있지 않는다. 어떻게 해서라도 은혜로운 일들이 일어나지 않도록 방해한다. ‘내가 이번 주 부터 새벽 기도에 나가 은혜를 좀 받아야 하겠다’고 하면, 꼭 첫날 부터 회사에서 일이 터진다. 

 

1) 그리스도 예수의 좋은 군사로 살아가려 하면 반드시 고난을 겪게 된다. 

· 고난을 겪을 수도 있고, 안 겪을 수도 있는 것이 아니라 반드시 고난을 겪게 된다. 사탄이 결코 가만히 두고 보지 않기 때문이다. (3절) 그러나 우리는 그런 고난 앞에서 그저 두려워하고 피하려고만 해서는 안된다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서는 성도들로 하여금 고난의 시간을 통해 하나님의 은혜를 경험하게 하시기도 하고, 더욱 굳건한 믿음의 사람들로 세워지게도 하시기 때문이다. 무엇보다도 나중에 하나님께 칭찬과 영광과 존귀를 얻게 된다. (벧전1:6,7) 

· 원래 예수 믿는 사람들을 잡아 가두던 검찰관이었던 바울도 다메섹에서 예수님을 직접 만난 이후 삼일 동안 마시지도 먹지도 보지도 못하는 시간을 가져야만 했다.(행9:4-6) 하나님께서 바울에게 그런 시간을 갖게 하신 것은 결국 그 눈에 덮여 있는 비늘 같은 것이 벗겨지게 하기 위함이었다.(행9:18) 하나님께서 그로 하여금 지금까지 세상을 보아왔던 눈이 아니라, 하나님의 시각으로 세상을 바라볼 수 있도록 하신 일이었다.    * 사울(Σαῦλος )은 유대식 이름, 바울(Παῦλος )은 로마식 이름

 

2-1) 그리스도의 좋은 군사들이 되려면 자기 생활에 얽메여서는 안된다. 

· 그리스도의 군사는 생활에 얽메임이 아니고 사명에 얽매여야 한다.(4절) 병사가 전쟁에 나갔는데 자기 생활에 얽메여서 두고 온 가족들을 생각하고, 가족들 챙기느라고 정신이 없으면 전쟁을 제대로 수행할 수 없다. 자신의 사적인 생활에 얽메여 살면 결국은 사명을 놓치게 되는 것이다.

· 안타깝게도 오늘날 우리들은 사적인 일에 얽메이는 경우가 많다. 평소에는 객관적으로 판단하고 행동하던 사람들도 막상 어려운 상황들이 내 삶에도 발생하게 되면 금방 균형을 잃어버린다. 편향된 생각을 하게 되고, 자기 쪽 입장에서만 생각하게 된다. 특별히 자식들을 위한 일이라면 그 어떤 것도 용납될 수 있고, 심지어는 주일 예배나 신앙 생활까지 양보하게 만든다. 

· 그러므로 지나고 나면 별로 중요하지도 않은 일 가지고 진을 빼고 있지는 않는 지, 자기 생활에 얽메여 사느라 내가 정말 해야 할 일을 놓치고 있지는 않는 지 항상 돌아보아야 한다.

 

2) 그리스도의 군사는 법대로 살아야 한다. 

· 법대로 산다는 것은 하나님의 말씀대로 사는 것이다. 내 삶의 경험과 지식을 따라, 내 생각을 따라 사는 것이 아니라, 우리를 가장 최선의 길로 인도하시는 주님의 말씀을 따라 사는 것이다.(5절)

· 법 중에 최고의 법은 아가페 법이다. 아가페의 사랑으로 하면 실패함이 없기 때문이다. 고전13:8이 ‘사랑은 언제까지 떨어지지 아니하고’ 라고 번역되어 있지만 영어 성경에는 이 부분이 ‘사랑으로 하면 실패함이 없다’는 말로 되어 있다.     *떨어지다 (피프토/ πίπτω)  = 실패하다, 효력을 잃다

· 선교도 영혼 구원 시키려 애쓸 것이 아니라 사랑해주기를 애쓰면 된다. 혹시 ‘예수’의 ‘예’ 자도 꺼낼 수 없는 상황이라면 그냥 예수님의 사랑을 전하면 된다. 그러면 그 사랑이 언젠가는 싹을 틔워 그로 하여금 영혼 구원의 열매로 맺혀지게 하기 때문이다. 

· 하나님이 중요하게 카운트 하시는 것도 오직 믿음으로 살았느냐 인데, 이 믿음이라는 것이 알고 보면 사랑으로 표현된다. 다시 말하면 믿음 좋은 것이 사랑 많이 해주는 것이다. (갈5:6)  감사하게도 그렇게 살아가고 있으면 나머지는 하나님께서 친히 처리하신다. (창12:3)   *사울 왕을 친히 처리하신 하나님

 

3) 그리스도의 좋은 군사는 또한 수고하는 가운데 인내하는 자이다. 

· 수고하는 농부가 곡식을 먼저 받는 것이 마땅하다 말씀은 두 가지의 의미가 있다.(6절) 먼저는 열매를 얻으려면 수고해야 한다는 것을 의미한다. ‘주님이 하십니다’ 라고 하면서 아무 것도 안하고 있으면 열매가 없는 것은 당연하다. 누가 보든 보지 않든, 내가 해야할 일을 묵묵히 수고롭게 하고 있으면 그 모습을 하나님이 다 보고 계신다. 그리고 그런 수고를 하는 사람들을 하나님이 쓰신다.   

*신학교를 다닐 때 아무도 보지 않아도 교회를 위해 했던 일

· 수고하는 농부의 비유에는 또 하나의 중요한 의미가 있다. 수고하는 농부가 열매를 얻기 까지는 상당 기간을 기다려야 한다는 것이다. 아무리 많은 수고를 해도 기다려야 하는 고통이 없이 결과는 없다. 마치 인디안 기우제처럼 결과가 나올 때까지 기대하며 기도하며 기다리면 정말로 하나님이 역사하신다. 

*여리고성 싸움에서 몇 일이 지나도 성이 무너질 조짐이 전혀 없게 하셨던 이유

· 머리 좋은 사람, 아이디어가 많은 사람, 그래서 당장에 눈에 보여지는 상황을 보면서 매사에 군시렁 대는 사람이 아니라, 묵묵히 믿음 가운데 기다리는 사람이 바로 믿음의 사람이고, 바로 그런 사람이 그리스도의 좋은 군사이다. 그리고 하나님은 바로 그런 사람을 통해 당신의 일을 하신다.    *‘No Pain, No Gain’ 

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 바울이 세가지 비유를 통해 그리스도의 좋은 군사에 대해 말한 것을 설명해보고, 실제 나의 삶의 경우 어떤 부분이 문제가 있는 지 나누어보자. 

 

A Good Soldier of Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2:3–6)

· Today, whenever Christians seek to carry out the work of the Lord, Satan never remains idle. He does everything he can to prevent God’s gracious work from taking place. The moment someone says, “Starting this week, I am going to attend early morning prayer and receive spiritual renewal,” a crisis suddenly breaks out at work on the very first day.

 

1) Good soldiers of Christ Jesus will inevitably face hardship.

· Hardship is not something that we may or may not experience. We will inevitably face it because Satan will never simply stand by and leave us alone. 

· However, we must not merely become afraid or try to avoid hardship. Through seasons of suffering, God allows His people to experience His grace and strengthens them into people of steadfast faith. Above all, their faith will ultimately result in praise, glory, and honor from God. (1 Peter 1:6–7)

· Even Paul, who had once hunted down and imprisoned those who believed in Jesus, had to go through three days in Damascus during which he could neither see nor eat nor drink after encountering Jesus personally. (Acts 9:4–6)

· God allowed Paul to go through that experience so that something like scales would eventually fall from his eyes. (Acts 9:18) God was enabling him to see the world no longer through the eyes with which he had viewed it before, but from God’s perspective.  *Saul (Σαῦλος) was his Jewish name, while Paul (Παῦλος) was his Roman name.

 

2-1) Good soldiers of Christ must not become entangled in the affairs of everyday life.

· A soldier of Christ must not be bound by the affairs of everyday life but by the mission entrusted to him. (v. 4 ) When a soldier goes to war, he cannot carry out his duty properly if he is preoccupied with the family he left behind and distracted by taking care of personal matters. When we become entangled in our private lives, we eventually lose sight of our mission.  

· Sadly, many of us today become overly entangled in personal matters. Even those who normally think and act objectively can quickly lose their balance when difficult circumstances arise in their own lives. They become biased and begin to see everything only from their own point of view.

· This is especially true when their children are involved. They may justify almost anything for the sake of their children, even compromising Sunday worship and their life of faith.

·Therefore, we must continually examine ourselves. Are we exhausting ourselves over matters that will seem insignificant once they have passed? Are we so entangled in our personal lives that we are neglecting or missing what we are truly called to do?

 

2-2) Good soldiers of Christ must live according to the rules.

· To live according to the rules means to live according to the Word of God. We are not to live according to our own experiences, knowledge, or opinions, but according to the Word of the Lord, who leads us on the best possible path. (v. 5)

The highest of all laws is the law of agape love because when we act in agape love, we do not fail. First Corinthians 13:8 is translated in Korean as, “Love never falls away,” but many English Bibles translate it as, ‘Love never fails.’

*To fall — piptō (πίπτω): to fail or to lose one’s effectiveness.

· Even in missions, rather than trying only to convert souls, we should seek to love people. In situations where we cannot even mention the first syllable of the name ‘Jesus,’ we can simply demonstrate the love of Jesus. One day, that love will sprout, grow, and bear the fruit of salvation in that person’s life.

· What matters most to God is whether we have lived by faith. Yet when we examine the nature of faith, we discover that faith expresses itself through love. In other words, to have great faith is to show great love. (Galatians 5:6)

Thankfully, when we live in this way, God Himself takes care of everything else. (Genesis 12:3)   *God Himself dealt with King Saul.

 

2-3) Good soldiers of Christ work diligently and persevere patiently.

· The statement that “the hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops” has two meanings. (v. 6) First, it means that we must work diligently in order to produce fruit. If we say, “The Lord will do it,” while doing nothing ourselves, it is only natural that there will be no fruit.

· Whether anyone sees us or not, when we quietly and faithfully carry out the work we are responsible for, God sees it all. And God uses those who are willing to work diligently. *The things I did for the church during my seminary years, even when no one was watching.

· The illustration of the hardworking farmer carries another important meaning. A farmer must wait a considerable amount of time before receiving the harvest.

No matter how hard we work, there can be no result without the pain of waiting. Like the old saying about a rain dance that continues until the rain finally comes, when we continue to hope, pray, and wait until the result appears, God truly works.  *Why God allowed several days to pass during the battle of Jericho without showing any sign that the walls were about to fall.

· A person of faith is not simply someone who is intelligent, full of ideas, or constantly complains about every situation based only on what is immediately visible. A true person of faith is someone who waits quietly and patiently in faith. Such a person is a good soldier of Christ. And it is through people like this that God accomplishes His work.  *’No Pain, No Gain!’

Study and Application Question

1)Explain what Paul teaches about a good soldier of Christ through the three illustrations—the soldier, the athlete, and the farmer. Then discuss which areas of your own life need to be examined or changed in light of these teachings.
