두려움이 아니라 능력과 사랑과 절제의 영을 주셨습니다  (딤후1:7-9)

 

*디모데후서는 사도 바울이 순교하기 직전, 주후 66년경 로마의 감옥에서 자신의 삶과 사역을 정리하는 상황에서 마지막으로 쓴 편지다. 오늘날 나름대로 복음을 위해 살아가고자 하는 가운데 힘든 상황들이 있는 우리 모두에게 큰 감동과 은혜를 주는 말씀들이다. 

 

1) 바울이 전한 복음은 생명의 약속에 관한 이야기이다. 

· 생명의 약속이란 죄로 말미암아 하나님과의 관계가 끊어짐으로 영적으로는 죽었던 자에게 하나님의 생명이 다시 회복되게 하시겠다는 것이다. 생명을 부여 받을 자격도 없고 공로도 없는 우리들에게 그 축복이 주어지는 것은 오직 하나님의 은혜일 뿐이다.(9절)  *성철 스님의 열반송 (동아일보 1993년 11월 4일자 기사)

· 알아야 할 것은 그 생명의 약속이 이루어지는 과정에서는 반드시 어려운 일들이 발생한다는 것이다. 나에게 생명의 약속이 이루어지려 하거나, 나를 통해 다른 사람들에게 생명의 약속이 이루어지는 과정에서 반드시 고통의 시간들이 주어진다는 것이다.   *요셉이 형들 앞에서 한 말(창45:7,8)

· 요셉이 겪은 고통의 시간들은 구원의 역사가 일어나는 과정에서 예수 그리스도께서 겪으셨던 십자가의 고난과 죽음을 상징하는 것이었다. 또한 오늘날 구원 역사에 동참하는 여러분이 지금도 인생 가운데 경험하고 있는 고통스러운 일들을 상징하는 것이기도 하다. 감사한 것은 복음으로 인한 고난을 잘 견딜 수 있도록 하나님께서 성령을 보내주셨다는 것이다.(8절b)      *‘마음(프뉴마(πνεῦμα)’ = 성령

 

2-1) 성령께서는 우리에게 두려워하는 마음이 아니라 능력을 주시는 영이다. 

· 여기서 말하는 두려움(데일리아스/ δειλίας )은 단순한 감정적 두려움이 아니라, 책임 앞에서 물러서고 위축되는 비겁함이나 소심한 마음 등을 의미한다. 실제로 디모데는 당시 만연해 있던 거짓 교사들을 두려워 하고 있었다. 더구나 그는 육체적으로도 병약해서 늘 의기 소침해 있었다. 특별히 자신의 영적인 아버지와 같은 바울이 투옥된 후에는 더더욱 그랬다.(8절)

· 만약에 지금 마음 속에 두려움이 있다면 그것은 사탄이 주는 마음이라는 것을 알아야 한다. 두려움을 통해 은혜의 자리에 앉지 못하게 하려는 것이다. 모처럼 복음을 위해 살고자 하는 결단의 마음들을 무너뜨리고, 주저 앉게 하려는 것이다. 

· 사람들이 가장 두려워하는 것이 있다면 죽음일 것이다. 그 죽음에 대한 두려움은 사람들로 하여금 복음을 위해 살기 보다는 그저 삶의 문제에 집착하게 만든다. 복음을 위해 고난 받는 일을 피하게 하고 망설이게 한다. 그러나 사도 바울은 능력의 영으로 오신 성령의 도우심을 입어 죽음 조차 두려워하지 않으며 복음을 위해 헌신하는 삶을 살았다.    *바울의 로마 감옥 안에서의 고백(빌1:20,21)

 

2-2) 성령께서는 사랑의 마음을 주셨다. 

· 우리가 죄로 말미암아 영원한 형벌을 받지 않고 하나님의 자녀로 이 땅에서 뿐 아니라 영원한 나라에서도 축복된 삶을 살 수 있게 된 것도 하나님의 아가페의 사랑의 결과였다. 그리고 무엇보다도 그 사랑은 우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때, 아직 하나님께 원수 노릇하고 있었을 때 베풀어진 사랑이었다. 

· 하나님이 그런 사랑을 베풀어 주신 목적은 다시는 자신을 위하여 살지 않고 죽었다가 다시 살아나신 이를 위하여 살게 하기 위함이었다.(고후5:15) 그리고 그런 삶은 먼저 받은 사랑을 기억하면서 다른 사람들을 열심히 사랑하는 것이다.(요13:34,35)

· 만약 그 사랑을 받은 우리가 다른 사람들을 너그러이 용납하고 품어주지 않는다면, 또 내 먹을 것만 챙기면서 내 배만 채우려고 한다면, 그것은 배은망덕한 것이다. 그리고 만약 그 출발이 아가페의 사랑이 아니라면 아무리 책망하고 벌을 주어도 사람들의 영혼이 구원되거나 바뀌어지지 않는다. 

· 문제는 그것을 알면서도 사람의 힘으로는 그 사랑을 할 수 없다는 것이다. 결코 실패함이 없는 아가페의 사랑은 하나님만이 하시는 사랑이기 때문이다. 감사한 것은 하나님만이 할 수 있는 아가페의 사랑을 성도들은 할 수 있다.(요일4:19)     *두 아들을 죽인 원수를 양아들로 받아들인 손양원 목사

 

2-3) 성령께서는 우리에게 절제의 마음도 주셨다. 

· 사도 바울은 자랑거리가 이런 저런 대단한 일을 이룬 것이 아니라 날마다 자신을 쳐서 복종 시키는 것이라고 한다.(고전15:31) 자신이 죽어야 주의 뜻이 이루어지기 때문이다. 그러나 우리는 나를 죽이지 않는다. 내가 나서야 일이 된다고 생각한다.

· 내가 철저히 죽어지고, 내가 절제할 때, 그 때 하나님은 자신의 능력으로 모든 복종하지 않는 자들을 벌하신다.(고후10:4,6) 바꿔 말하면 어떤 견고한 진도 무너뜨리는 하나님의 능력이 지금  안 나타나고 있다면 그것은 저 사람 때문이 아니라 바로 나 때문이다. 내가 하나님께서 하실 것을 굳게 믿고, 나를 쳐서 복종시키고 있으면 나는 가만히 있어도 그 때 하나님께서 나타나셔서 친히 일하신다. 

· 그 절제도 내가 할 수 있는 것이 아니라 성령께서 하게 하신다. 절제가 영어로는 self-control인데, 사실은 이것이 Jesus-control이다. 예수가 우리를 통제해 주셔야 가능한 것이지, 사실은 나도 나를 통제할 수 없다. 그러므로 오늘도 복음과 함께 고난 받기를 자처할 때, 우리는 가장 먼저 성령의 도우심을 구해야 한다.     *16개의 방이 있는 대저택을 선교사들의 숙소로 내어 놓은 챨리 신 회장

God Has Given Us the Spirit of Power, Love, and Self-Control, Not Fear

(2 Timothy 1:7–9)

·Second Timothy was the final letter written by the Apostle Paul around A.D. 66 from a Roman prison, shortly before his martyrdom, as he reflected on his life and ministry. These words offer deep encouragement and grace to all of us today who encounter difficulties while seeking to live for the gospel.

 

1) The Gospel Paul Proclaimed Is the Message of the Promise of Life

· The promise of life means that God restores His life to those who were spiritually dead because sin had broken their relationship with Him. We have neither the qualifications nor the merit to receive this life. This blessing is given to us solely by the grace of God. (v. 9)*The final nirvana verse of the Buddhist monk Seongcheol—an article published in The Dong-A Ilbo 

· What we must understand is that difficulties inevitably arise in the process through which the promise of life is fulfilled. When the promise of life is being fulfilled in us, or when God is fulfilling that promise in others through us, times of suffering will inevitably come. *Joseph’s words to his brothers(Genesis 45:7–8)

· The suffering Joseph experienced symbolized the suffering and death of Jesus Christ on the cross in the process of accomplishing salvation. It also represents the painful experiences that you may be going through today as you participate in God’s work of salvation. The good news is that God has sent us the Holy Spirit so that we may faithfully endure suffering for the gospel.(v. 8b)  *’Spirit(pneuma /πνεῦμα)’ refers to the Holy Spirit.

 

2-1) The Holy Spirit Does Not Give Us a Spirit of Fear, but a Spirit of Power

· The word “fear” used here, deilias (δειλίας), does not simply refer to an emotional feeling of fear. It means cowardice or timidity that causes a person to shrink back and withdraw when faced with responsibility. Timothy was, in fact, afraid of the false teachers who were widespread at that time. Moreover, he was physically weak and often discouraged. This became even more severe after Paul, who was like a spiritual father to him, was imprisoned. (v. 8)

· When fear fills our hearts, we must recognize that such fear comes from Satan. Satan uses fear to keep us from taking our place in God’s grace. He seeks to destroy the decisions we have made to live for the gospel and to make us give up and sit down in defeat.

· Death is probably what people fear most. The fear of death causes people to become preoccupied with the problems of this life rather than living for the gospel. It causes them to avoid suffering for the gospel and makes them hesitate. However, with the help of the Holy Spirit, who came as the Spirit of power, the Apostle Paul lived a life devoted to the gospel without being afraid even of death.  *Paul’s confession from a Roman prison—Philippians 1:20–21

 

2-2) The Holy Spirit Gives Us a Heart of Love

· The reason we do not receive eternal punishment for our sins, but instead live as God’s children and enjoy a blessed life both on this earth and in His eternal kingdom, is the result of God’s agape love. Above all, this love was given to us while we were still sinners and while we were still living as enemies of God.

· God gave us this love so that we would no longer live for ourselves, but for Him who died and was raised again for us.(2 Corinthians 5:15) Such a life means remembering the love we first received and earnestly loving others.(John 13:34–35)

· Since we have received such love, it would be ungrateful of us to refuse to generously accept and embrace others, or to care only about our own food and satisfying our own desires. Furthermore, when our actions do not begin with agape love, no matter how severely we rebuke or punish people, their souls will neither be saved nor truly changed.

· The problem is that even though we know this, we cannot love with such love through human strength. Agape love, which never fails, is the love that only God can give. The good news is that believers can love with this agape love that only God possesses. (1 John 4:19)  *Pastor Son Yang-won, who accepted as his adopted son the enemy who had killed his two sons

 

2-3) The Holy Spirit Also Gives Us a Spirit of Self-Control

· The Apostle Paul says that his true reason for boasting was not that he had accomplished many remarkable things, but that he died daily by disciplining himself and bringing himself into submission. (1 Corinthians 15:31)

This is because God’s will can be accomplished only when the self dies. Yet we refuse to die to ourselves. We think that things will work only when we step forward and take control.

· When I die completely to myself and exercise self-control, God then punishes every act of disobedience by His own power. (2 Corinthians 10:6)

In other words, when God’s power, which can demolish every stronghold, is not being revealed, the problem may not be that other person. The problem may be me. When I firmly trust that God will do what only He can do and discipline myself into obedience, I do not have to force the situation. God Himself will appear and accomplish His work.

· This self-control is also not something we can produce by our own strength. The Holy Spirit enables us to exercise it. In English, we call it “self-control,” but in reality, it is “Jesus-control.” It is possible only when Jesus controls us, because we cannot truly control even ourselves. Therefore, whenever we willingly choose to suffer for the gospel, the first thing we must do is ask for the help of the Holy Spirit. *Chairman Charlie Shin, who opened his sixteen-bedroom mansion as a place of lodging and rest for missionaries
