열매 맺는 믿음  (창50:15-21)

 

· 믿음의 출발은 예수님께서 우리가 지은 죄의 댓가를 대신 치르기 위해 십자가에 죽으신 후, 죽음을 이기시고 다시 사심으로 우리 죄의 문제를 완전히 해결하셨음을 믿는 것이다. 그러나 열매 맺는 믿음은 예수님 닮은 선교적 삶을 통해 다른 사람들의 영혼들까지 예수님께로 인도하는 믿음이다. 

 

   1) 요셉의 믿음은 하나님의 약속을 이루어내는 열매 맺는 믿음이었다. 

· 요셉의 형들은 아버지 야곱이 죽자 아버지가 돌아가시기 전 형들의 악행에  대해 용서하라는 말을 하셨다면서 요셉 앞에 엎드려 빌기까지 했다.(17,18절) 이런 형들의 모습에 요셉은 형들의 생각과는 전혀 다르게 두려워하는 형들을 위로하고 한 술 더 떠서 형들의 자녀들까지 책임져주겠다고 말한다.(19, 21절) 심지어 자신의 마음을 몰라 두려워 떨고 있는 형들을 보면서 마음 아파 울기 까지 했다.(17절) 

· 요셉의 결단은 형들과의 깨어진 관계를 회복하게 만들었고, 무엇보다도 이스라엘을 향한 하나님의 약속이 이루어지게 했다. 형들 뿐 아니라 그 이후의 후손들의 생명을 구원하는 일을 한 것이다. 만약 요셉이 그런 믿음의 결단을 하지 않았다면 야곱의 아들들은 애굽에 내려가 살 수도 없었을 것이고, 당연히 큰 민족을 이루어 내지도 못했을 것이다. 

· 요셉의 모습은 내 자신 뿐 아니라 주변의 많은 사람들이 하나님 나라 백성으로 부름 받는데 통로 역할을 하는 것이었으며, 곧 오늘날 먼저 하나님 나라 백성으로 부름받은 우리들이 가져야 할 열매 맺는 믿음의 모습이었다.

 

2-1) 열매 맺는 믿음은 원수 갚는 일이 철저히 하나님께 있음을 믿는 믿음이었다. 

· 요셉은 철저하게 원수 갚음이 하나님께 있음을 고백한 사람이었다. 자신이 직접 원수 갚지 아니한다 할지라도 하나님께서 판단하시고 심판하실 것이라는 믿음이 있었기 때문이다. 

· 우리는 하나님과의 관계 속에서 사람들과의 문제를 바라보아야 한다. 그리하면 우리에게는 결코 판단할 자격이 없음을 확인하게 되고, 더구나 원수 갚을 권한이 우리에게는 없다는 것을 확인하게 된다. 실제로 하나님은 악인을 다스릴 때 의로운 사람들을 사용하지 않으신다. 오히려 또 다른 악인들을 통해 악인을 다스리신다.    *북 이스라엘과 남 유다를 치실 때 사용하신 나라들

· 그리스도의 십자가의 은혜로 하나님의 자녀가 된 성도들에게는 원수 갚을 권한이 없다. 원수 갚을 만한 자격도 없다. 우리들도 하나님 앞에 악을 행했던 자들이고, 십자가의 은혜가 아니 였으면 용서 받을 수 없었을 사람들이었기 때문이다. 우리에게는 오히려 원수를 긍휼히 여기며 기도해 주어야 할 의무만 있다.(롬12:14,17) 사실 가장 멋지게 원수 갚는 것은 악을 선으로 갚는 것이다.

2-2) 열매 맺는 믿음은 하나님이 모든 것을 합력해서 선을 이루시는 분이신 것을 믿는 믿음이다. 

· 하나님은 요셉으로 하여금 보디발의 집에 팔려가게 하셨지만, 거기서 가정 총무의 일을 맡게 하셨다. 그리고 이것은 후에 그가 총리가 되었을 때 애굽 전체의 식량 문제를 책임지고 잘 감당하게 하는 좋은 훈련이 되는 일이었다. 또한 사단은 보디발의 아내의 마음을 움직여서 요셉을 유혹했지만, 이 일을 거부한 요셉은 감옥에 갇히게 되었다. 그러나 하나님은 이 일을 통해 요셉이 애굽의 총리가 되게 하셨다. 

· 결국 요셉이 겪게 된 모든 삶의 과정은 하나도 빠짐없이 나중에 하나님의 뜻이 이루어지게 하는 데 다 쓰임이 있게 하셨다. 하나님은 이 과정을 통하여 요셉으로 하여금 철저히 하나님의 때를 기다리는 훈련을 하게 하셨다.   *현재의 고통은 하나님의 경륜의 일부요, 나를 교육하시는 하나님의 교과 과정

· 겸손이란 하나님의 능력의 손에 내 모든 염려를 맡기는 것이다. 주변에 걱정 많이 해주는 사람이 반드시 신실한 사람이 아닐 수 있는 이유이다.  ‘그가 너희를 돌보심이라( αὐτῷ μέλει περὶ ὑμῶν’ 아우토 멜레이 페리 휘몬) 의 말씀은 염려를 주께 맡기는 순간 우리의 모든 일들이 그분의 관심사가 된다는 말이다. 

· 독수리의 눈으로 돌아보고 계셨던 하나님의 뜻이 이루어진다면 우리는 아무 것도 염려할 것이 없다. 다 그 분께 맡길 수 있다. 그런 하나님을 굳게 신뢰한다면 설사 누군가가 나를 속여도, 내가 망하게 된다 할지라도 궁극적으로는 하나님이 뜻을 이루실 것을 믿기에 다시 일어설 수 있다. 

*내가 지금 아깝게 생각하는 것들도 하나도 아까운 것이 아닌 이유

 

2-3) 열매 맺는 믿음은 항상 마음을 약속의 땅 위에 두는 믿음이다.  

· 요셉은 애굽에서 생애를 보내고 거기서 죽지만 그의 마음은 항상 약속의 땅에 있었다.(25절)  마음이 하늘 나라에 있으면 이 땅에서는 조금 손해를 봐도 괞잖다. 조금 못 살아도 괜찮다. 조금 자존심이 상해도 된다. 조금 상처를 받아도 된다. 오늘 나는 영원히 나를 지켜 주지도 못할 소유물에 두고 있지는 않는 지, 나의 알량한 자존심을 지키느라 목숨 걸고 싸우고 있지는 않는지 돌아보아야 한다.  그리할 때 이 땅에서 벌어지는 모든 일에 대하여 초연해질 수 있게 된다.

· 남아공에 와 있는 말라위 형제들에게 힘든 삶을 살아가게 하신 이유는 그 가운데 굳건한 믿음이 세워지게 하시려는 것이다. 그래서 철저히 하나님을 신뢰하며, 또 하나님 나라만을 바라보며 살아가게 하시려는 것이다. 약속의 땅을 바라볼 때 그들은 먹고 살기도 힘든 자기의 고향 땅으로 돌아갈 수 있었다 

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 요셉을 통해 확인된 열매 맺는 믿음의 모습을 성경 구절을 근거로 들어 구체적으로 설명해보라.

2) 요셉이 보여준 열매 맺는 믿음과 관련하여 내가 잘 하지 못하고 있는 부분들을 실제 사례를 들어 나누어보고, 말씀을 들은 후 어떤 결단을 하게 되었는 지 나누어보라. 

Fruit-Bearing Faith  (Genesis 50:15–21)

 

· The starting point of faith is believing that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins, conquered death, rose again, and completely resolved the problem of our sin. But fruit-bearing faith is the kind of faith that leads even the souls of others to Jesus through a missional life that resembles Him.

 

1) Joseph’s faith was a fruit-bearing faith that fulfilled God’s promise.

· When Jacob, their father, died, Joseph’s brothers came and bowed down before him, even pleading with him by saying that before their father died, he had told Joseph to forgive the evil they had done. (vv. 17–18) But Joseph responded in a way completely different from what his brothers expected. He comforted them in their fear, and even went further by promising to care for their children as well. (vv. 19, 21) In fact, when he saw his brothers trembling in fear because they did not understand his heart, Joseph was so grieved that he wept. (v. 17)

· Joseph’s decision restored the broken relationship with his brothers, and more importantly, it allowed God’s promise for Israel to be fulfilled. Through Joseph, not only his brothers but also the generations after them were saved. If Joseph had not made that decision of faith, the sons of Jacob would not have been able to live in Egypt, and they certainly would not have become a great nation.

· Joseph’s life became a channel through which not only he himself, but many others around him, were called to become the people of God’s kingdom. This is the very picture of fruit-bearing faith that those of us who have first been called as God’s kingdom people must have today.

 

2-1) Fruit-bearing faith believes that vengeance belongs entirely to God.

· Joseph was a man who thoroughly confessed that vengeance belongs to God. He had faith that even if he did not take revenge himself, God would judge and repay according to His own righteousness.

· We must look at our problems with people in light of our relationship with God. Then we come to realize that we have no right to judge, and even more, that we have no authority to take revenge. In fact, when God deals with the wicked, He does not necessarily use righteous people. Rather, He often uses other wicked people to discipline the wicked.   *The nations God used when He judged Northern Israel and Southern Judah

· Those who have become God’s children by the grace of Christ’s cross have no authority to take revenge. We do not even have the qualification to do so. We ourselves were once those who did evil before God, and without the grace of the cross, we were people who could never have been forgiven. What we have instead is only the duty to show mercy to our enemies and pray for them. (Romans 12:14, 17) In truth, the most beautiful way to take revenge is to repay evil with good.   *What Nelson Mandela did after becoming president

 

2-2) Fruit-bearing faith believes that God works all things together for good.

· God allowed Joseph to be sold into Potiphar’s house, but there He entrusted Joseph with the responsibility of managing the household. Later, when Joseph became prime minister, that experience became excellent training that enabled him to faithfully oversee the food supply of all Egypt. Satan also stirred the heart of Potiphar’s wife to tempt Joseph, and because Joseph refused her, he was put in prison. But through that very event, God brought Joseph to become the prime minister of Egypt.

· In the end, every single part of Joseph’s life, without exception, was used by God to fulfill His will. Through this process, God trained Joseph to wait thoroughly for His timing.   *Present suffering is part of God’s providence and part of God’s curriculum through which He trains me.

· Humility means entrusting all our anxieties to the mighty hand of God. That is why a person who worries a great deal for others is not always necessarily a faithful person. The words, “because He cares for you” — autō melei peri hymōn (αὐτῷ μέλει περὶ ὑμῶν) — mean that the moment we cast our anxieties on the Lord, all our matters become His concern.

· If the will of God, who has been watching over us with the eyes of an eagle, is being fulfilled, then we have nothing to worry about. We can entrust everything to Him. If we firmly trust such a God, then even if someone deceives us, and even if it seems that we are ruined, we can rise again because we believe that ultimately God will accomplish His will. *Why even the things I now consider too precious to lose are, in the end, not worth clinging to.

 

2-3) Fruit-bearing faith always sets its heart on the promised land.

· Joseph spent his life in Egypt and died there, but his heart was always in the promised land. (v. 25) When our hearts are in the kingdom of heaven, it is all right to suffer a little loss on this earth. It is all right to live with a little less. It is all right to have our pride wounded a little. It is all right to be hurt a little. Today, we must examine ourselves and ask whether our hearts are set on possessions that cannot protect us forever, or whether we are fighting with all our strength just to protect our petty pride. When we do so, we can become free and detached from all the things that happen on this earth.

· The reason God allowed the Malawian brothers who came to South Africa to live through difficult lives was to establish firm faith within them. Through those hardships, God was teaching them to trust Him completely and to live with their eyes fixed on His kingdom alone. When they looked toward the promised land, they were able to return to their homeland, even though it was a place where it was difficult just to make a living.
