      작은 자를 택하신 하나님 (창48:1-5; 17-20)

 

· 사람들은 누구나 크고 강한 자가 되려고 한다. 하지만 하나님은 오히려 작은 자와 약한 자를 통해서 일하신다. 그것은 모든 일들이 결국 사람의 힘과 의지대로 되어 지는 것이 아니라, 오직 하나님이 하시는 일이라는 것을 보여주시려는 것이다. 그리고 그것을 아는 사람들은 오늘도 세상 사는 준비에 여념이 없는 것이 아니라, 하나님을 의지하는 가운데 주의 도우심을 구하기를 힘쓴다. 또한 인생의 목적이 오늘도 내 삶을 주관하시는 하나님의 뜻을 이루고자 하는 것으로 바뀌게 된다. 내가 아무리 애를 써도 결국은 내 뜻대로 내 욕심대로 되어지지 않는다는 것을 알기 때문이다. 

 

1) 야곱은 요셉의 두 아들을 축복하면서 그들을 언약 공동체의 일원으로 삼는다. 

· 야곱은 요셉의 두 아들인 에브라임과 므낫세를 축복하는 가운데 그들을 자기 아들로 삼고, 그들을 언약 안으로 편입시켰다. 원래 야곱의 열 두 아들 중 레위는 하나님께 구별 되어짐으로 야곱의 상속권을 계승하지 못한 대신 요셉의 두 아들이 합류하게 된다.(5절)

· 원래 에브라임과 므낫세는 야곱의 손자들로서 야곱의 상속자가 될 자격이 없었다. 더구나 에브라임과 므낫세의 어머니는 애굽 제사장의 딸이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 에브라임과 므낫세가 야곱의 상속자가 된 일은, 이 일들이 오직 하나님의 주권적인 결정에 의해 되는 일이라는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 

· 이것은 나중에 야곱이 에브라임과 므낫세를 축복할 때 손을 어긋나게 축복한 것과 또한 요셉이 르우벤 대신 장자의 명분을 얻게 되는 것을 통해서도 확인된다. 요셉은 에브라임과 므낫세 때문에 장자들이 그러했듯 다른 형제들에 비해 두 배의 상속을 하게 된 셈이었기 때문이다.(대상5:1,2)

· 위의 세가지 사실은 하나님의 약속의 대상자가 되는 일은 결국 하나님의 주권적인 선택의 결과로 주어지는 것임을 말한다. 인간적인 노력이나 의지로, 혹은 혈통으로 주어지는 것이 아니라는 말이다.

· 우리가 하나님의 자녀가 된 일도 혈통으로도 육신적인 노력으로도 안된다. 심지어 내가 하나님의 자녀가 되고 싶다고 해서 되는 것도 아니다. 오직 하나님이 하시는 일이다.(요1:12,13) 그러니 그 은혜를 받은 우리가 할 일은 오직 그 은혜에 감사하는 것 뿐이다. 나 보다 더 나은 사람들은 왜 선택해주지 않으셨느냐고 불공평한 일이라고 따질 일도 아니다.     *난자와 수정되는 정자가 가르쳐주는 교훈 

2-1) 은혜에 감사하는 삶은 내 뜻대로 되지 않는다고 불평하고 원망하지 않는 것이다. 

· 이 땅에서 아무리 좋고 소중하게 생각하는 것이라 할 지라도 택하심을 받은 은혜와는 비교할 수 없다.(마13:44) 당장 내가 갖고자 하는 그것들은 우리가 이 땅에 사는 동안만 우리를 행복하게 할 뿐, 이 땅의 삶을 마치고 나면 다 썩어 없어질 것들이기 때문이다. 설사 그 천국을 얻느라 땅의 것을 얻지 못했다 한들 그것 때문에 속상해 하고, 억울해 하고, 하나님 원망하고 있을 일이 아니다. 

· ‘나는 천국도 갖고 땅의 것도 가져야겠습니다’ 라고 한다면 그것은 한정식 집에 가서 반찬이 33가지인 한 상 거하게 받아 놓고 계란 찜 서비스로 안줬다고 따지는 것과 같다. 재산 상의 손해 뿐 아니라 생명을 잃게 된다 할지라도, 감사를 잃지 않고 예배하며, 하나님을 찬양할 수 있는 것이 진정으로 하나님의 자녀 됨에 감사하는 일이다.   *콩고 공화국에서 테러 당한 교회와 성도들이 다시 모여 예배드린 일

2-2) 선택 받은 것이 감사하다면 함부로 남을 판단하고 정죄하면 안된다. 

· 내가 선택 받은 것 자체가 순전히 하나님의 은혜인데, 잘난 구석 하나 없는 내가 뭐라고 함부로 남을 평가하고 판단하고 정죄까지 하겠는가? 교회 공동체가 어려워지는 이유도 판단하기 때문이다. 다들 자기의 기준을 가지고 남을 판단하면 공동체는 절대로 건강해 지지 않는다. 

· 우리가 할 일은 연약한 자를 보면 판단하고 정죄할 일이 아니라, 나에게도 저 사람 같이 연약한 부분이 있는데도 나를 택해주셔서 감사하다면서, 오히려 그들을 불쌍히 여기며 중보 기도할 수 있어야 한다.

· 감사한 것은 하나님께서는 신약 백성인 우리들에게는 판단하기 보다는 긍휼히 여기며 축복하는 삶을 살 수 있도록 성령을 보내주셨다는 것이다. 성령으로 말미암아 서로 사랑하라는 하나님의 명령의 말씀을 지켜 행할 수 있게 해주셨다.(겔36:26,27)  그것이 새 계명과 옛 계명의 차이다. 

*‘새’ =  ‘카이노스’ = ‘질적으로 완전히 다른 것’   *When it doubts, Love!’ 

2-3) 감사하는 삶은 자신의 모습에 실망하고 무너져 있지 않는 것이다. 

· 어떤 사람들일지라도 주께 붙들린 바 된다면 쓰임받을 수 있다. 겉으로 보면 므낫세가 장자의 축복을 받아야 했지만, 야곱은 에브라임에게 장자의 축복을 주었다. 그러니 현재 내가 가지고 있는 것, 현재 나의 수준, 이런 것들에 너무 마음 뺏기지 않아야 한다. 하나님이 부른 사람들은 육체를 따라 지혜 있는 자가 많지 않고, 능한 자가 많지 않고, 문벌 좋은 자가 많지 않은 이유도 마찬가지이다. (고전1:26,27) 

· 다만 그 일이 되고 안되고는 하나님께 달려 있으므로 내가 바라는 대로 일이 되지 않았을 지라도 낙심하지 않으면 된다. 다만 결론이 나기 전까지는 내 모습 보고 미리 포기하지는 말아야 한다.

· 자신의 건강이든, 비지니스든, 직장 문제든, 자녀 문제든, 하나님은 결코 포기하지 않고 우리를 위해 어딘가에서 이미 준비하고 계신다. 여리고성이 무너질 때 마지막 날 일곱 바퀴 다 돌고 나서 무너졌다. 도무지 안될 것 같았지만 하나님이 약속하신 일이기에 결국 하나님의 때가 이르자 한 순간에 무너졌다.

 · 아무리 부족하고 보잘 것 없어 보여도, 택하신 자녀들을 포기하지 않으신다. 아무리 준비된 것 없어도 쓰시기 원하시면 필요한 모든 것을 준비하신다. 하나님께서 하실 것을 믿는 믿음이 중요하다. 

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 언약의 대상자가 되는 일은 주권적 선택의 결과라는 사실을 오늘 본문에서 세 가지로 설명해보라. 

2) 은혜에 감사하는 삶 세 가지를 설명해보고, 그 중에 내가 마음에 새겨야 할 부분은 어떤 부분인지 각자의 삶을 나누어보자. 

God Who Chooses the Lesser One

(Genesis 48:1–5, 17–20)

• Everyone wants to become great and strong. But God often works through the small and the weak. Through this, He shows that in the end, things are accomplished not by human strength or human will, but by God alone. Those who know this do not spend their lives merely preparing to survive in this world. Rather, they strive to seek the Lord’s help as they depend on Him. The purpose of life also changes into a desire to fulfill the will of God, who rules over our lives even today. This is because they know that, no matter how hard they try, things will not ultimately turn out according to their own will or selfish desire.

1) As Jacob blesses Joseph’s two sons, he makes them members of the covenant community.

• As Jacob blessed Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, he adopted them as his own sons and brought them into the covenant. Originally, among Jacob’s twelve sons, Levi was set apart for God and therefore did not receive an inheritance as the others did. In his place, Joseph’s two sons were included instead (v. 5).

• Originally, Ephraim and Manasseh were Jacob’s grandsons, so they had no qualification to become Jacob’s heirs. Moreover, their mother was the daughter of an Egyptian priest. Yet the fact that Ephraim and Manasseh became Jacob’s heirs shows that this took place solely by God’s sovereign decision.

• This is also confirmed later when Jacob crossed his hands while blessing Ephraim and Manasseh, and when Joseph received the birthright in place of Reuben. Because of Ephraim and Manasseh, Joseph effectively received a double portion of the inheritance compared to his brothers, just as the firstborn normally would (1 Chron. 5:1–2).

• These three facts show that becoming a recipient of God’s promise is ultimately granted as the result of God’s sovereign choice. It is not given by human effort, human will, or even by bloodline.

• In the same way, becoming children of God does not happen by bloodline or by human effort. It does not happen simply because I want to become God’s child. It is God’s work alone (John 1:12–13). Therefore, all we can do, having received this grace, is give thanks for it. It is not for us to complain that God was unfair because He did not choose someone who seems better than we are.

2-1) A life that is thankful for grace does not grumble or complain just because things do not go my way.

• No matter how good or precious something on this earth may seem, it cannot be compared with the grace of being chosen (Matt. 13:44). The things we desperately want right now can only make us happy during our short life on earth, but after this life is over, they will all decay and disappear. Even if gaining heaven meant not gaining the things of this world, that is still no reason to be upset, feel wronged, or complain against God.

• If someone says, “I want both heaven and the things of this world,” it is like going to a Korean full-course restaurant, being served a lavish table with thirty-three side dishes, and then complaining because they did not give you complimentary steamed egg. Even if we suffer financial loss, or even lose our lives, truly giving thanks for being God’s children means that we do not lose our gratitude, but continue to worship and praise God.  *The church in the Republic of the Congo who gathered again  after being attacked by terrorists

2-2) If I am truly thankful for having been chosen, I must not carelessly judge or condemn others.

• The very fact that I have been chosen is purely by God’s grace. If I have nothing in myself to boast of, who am I to evaluate, judge, or even condemn others so easily? One reason church communities become unhealthy is because people judge one another. If everyone judges others according to his or her own standard, that community can never become healthy.

• When we see someone who is weak, our calling is not to judge or condemn that person. Instead, we should remember that we too have similar weaknesses, and yet God still chose us. With that heart of gratitude, we should pity them and intercede for them in prayer.

• What is truly wonderful is that God has sent the Holy Spirit to us, the people of the new covenant, so that we may live not by judging others but by showing mercy and blessing them. Through the Holy Spirit, He enables us to obey His command to love one another (Ezek. 36:26–27). That is the difference between the old commandment and the new commandment. *“New” = “kainos” = something qualitatively entirely different    *When in doubt, love!

2-3) A thankful life does not collapse in disappointment over oneself.

• No matter what kind of person someone may be, if he is held by the Lord, he can be used by Him. Outwardly, Manasseh seemed the one who should receive the blessing of the firstborn, yet Jacob gave that blessing to Ephraim. Therefore, we must not be overly distracted by what we have now or by our present level and condition. For the same reason, among those whom God has called, there are not many who are wise by human standards, not many influential, and not many of noble birth (1 Cor. 1:26–27).

• Whether something succeeds or fails ultimately depends on God. So even if things do not turn out the way I hoped, there is no need to lose heart. But until the conclusion is clear, I should never look at myself and give up in advance.

• Whether it concerns your health, your business, your job, or your children, God never gives up on us. Even now, He is already preparing something for us somewhere. When the walls of Jericho fell, they fell only after the people had marched around them seven times on the final day. It looked utterly impossible, but because it was something God had promised, when His time came, it collapsed in a single moment.   *“No one left behind!” (the motto of the U.S. Air Force)

• No matter how lacking or insignificant His chosen children may appear, God does not give up on them. No matter how unprepared they may seem, if He wants to use them, He will prepare everything they need. What matters is faith that believes God will do what He has promised.
