여호와께서 함께 하시는 것이 형통한 것입니다 (창39:1-6)

 

· 그리스도인의 삶에도 갑작스럽고 예상하지 못했던 상황은 찾아온다. 더구나 고통스럽고 답답한 상황이 생각했던 것 보다 길어질 때도 있다. 그러나 참된 그리스도인은 그럴 때 일수록 더 빛을 드러낸다. 세상 사람들은 그런 상황들이 오면 금방 실망하고 불평하지만, 또 답답한 상황이 오래 지속되면 쉽게 포기하려 하지만, 그리스도인들은 함께 하시는 하나님으로 말미암아 묵묵히 견디어 낸다. 그리고 마침내 하나님의 살아계심을 증거하게 되는 것이다.

 

1) 형통함이란 어떤 상황에서도 여호와께서 함께 해주셔서 그분 뜻이 이루어지는 것이다. 

· 하나님은 요셉이 처음 애굽에 팔려올 때부터 함께 하셨다. 요셉보다 훨씬 더 힘이 쎄고 일도 잘 할 수 있는 젊은 노예들이 많이 있었을 터인데 이제 겨우 17세 밖에 되지 않은 요셉이 애굽 고관의 집에 팔려가게 하셨다. (1, 2절) 

· 우리는 보통 ‘형통’이라는 말의 의미를 그저 성공하고 잘 되는 것을 의미한다고 생각한다. 물론 형통함의 결과 그런 일들이 있는 것도 사실이지만, 원래 형통이라는 말의 의미는 ‘여호와 하나님께서 함께 하신다’는 의미다. 

*형통( מַצְלִיחַ /matsliaḥ) =어근이 צָלַח(살라/ṣālaḥ) = ‘밀고 나가다’, ‘앞으로 뚫고 전진하다’

· 중요한 것은 그 형통함이 요셉으로 하여금 보디발의 아내의 유혹도 이겨내게 했다는 것이다.(7절) 주인의 아내가 유혹하는 상황은 아무도 보지 않는 상황이었다. 그러나 자신의 삶에 여호와께서 늘 함께 하시며 다 보고 계신다는 것을 알고 있었기에 유혹을 물리칠 수 있었다.(9절) )  *그 후 = 요셉이 종으로 팔려온 지 10년 후, 27세 되던 해 

· 주인인 보디발은 아내의 이야기만 듣고 노하여 요셉을 감옥에 가두게 하였다. 놀라운 것은 요셉의 형통함은 감옥 안에서도 나타났다. 간수장이 모든 감옥 사무를 요셉에게 맡기게 하신 것이다.(23절)

· 가장 복된 자는 소유가 많은 자가 아니다. 지위가 높은 자가 아니다. 하나님께서 함께 하시는 자이다. 천국이 좋은 것은 그곳에 금과 은이 있어서가 아니다. 진주와 보석으로 치장 되었기 때문이 아니다. 하나님이 함께 하시기 때문이다. 

· 성도에게 가장 큰 위로의 말은 하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다는 것이다. 넘어야 할 산이 아무리 높다 해도 하나님이 함께 하시면 뒷동산이 되기 때문이다. 홍해 바다도 하나님이 함께 하시면 개울 물이 되기 때문이다. 하나님과 함께 하시면 고행 길이 즐거운 소풍 길이 되기 때문이다.

 

2) 우리가 겪는 모든 일들이 결국은 하나님의 선한 뜻이 이루어지게 하시기 위해 하시는 일들이다. 

· 그 후 요셉은 감옥 안에서 술 맡은 관원장을 만났고, 그를 통해 바로의 꿈을 해석하게 되어 애굽의 총리가 되게 하시려는 것이었다. 그리고 그가 애굽의 총리가 되었기 때문에 하나님이 아브라함에게 하셨던 약속이 이루어지게 하셨다.(창15:13,14)

· 요셉은 바로의 꿈을 해석해 주는 일이 계기가 되어 요셉은 애굽의 총리가 되었고, 흉년의 때 곡식을 구하러 온 형들과 아버지를 만난다. 그 때 야곱은 마음만 먹으면 얼마든지 보복할 수 있는 상황에서도 ‘이 모든 일들이 하나님께서 큰 구원의 일을 이루시려고 하신 일들이니 형들은 두려워하지 말라’고 말한다.( 창45:5,7,8) 만약 요셉이 형들에게 복수라도 했다면 아마 하나님이 아브라함에게 하셨던 약속은 이루어지지 않았을 것이다.

· 오늘 우리가 당하는 고난 중에 이유 없는 고난은 없다. 다 이유가 있고 필요한 것이기에 당하게 하신다. 분명한 것은 그 모든 일들을 겪는 과정에서 하나님은 철저히 우리와 동행하시며, 마침내 모든 힘든 일들이 지났을 때, 이 모든 일들이 결국은 선하신 뜻이 이루어지도록 하나님이 하신 일이라고 고백할 수 있게 하신다는 것이다. 

· 그러니 우리들은 그 과정에서 벌어진 일들에 마음을 빼앗기면 안된다. 눈 앞에 펼쳐진 상황에만 눈을 두면 안된다. 그러면 필시 사탄의 계략에 넘어가게 되어 있다. 대신 눈을 들어 하늘의 하나님을 보며 결론을 가지고 상대해야 한다. 그리고 그것은 결국 주께서 선하신 뜻을 이루실 것을 기대하며 오히려 축복하는 자의 삶을 사는 것이다. 

· 다만 한가지 기억해야 할 것은 그분의 선하신 뜻이 이루어지기까지 우리에게는 상당한 인내가 필요하다는 것이다. 주님의 뜻이 이루어지는 것은 그분의 때가 되어야 한다. 그리고 그 때까지 우리는 믿음의 시험을 계속해서 받게 될 수도 있다는 것을 기억해야 한다. 다시 말하면 성급하게 어떤 결과를 보려고 하지 않아야 한다는 말이다. *백향목이 해충에 강하고 향기가 멀리 가는 이유

· 이유 없는 고난이 많으면 많을수록, 믿음의 시험 기간이 길면 길 수록, 후에 올 하나님의 은혜는 더욱 크다. 오늘 우리 모두에게 주님께서 겪게 하시는 모든 상황들 역시 우리 자신이 고흐의 그림 속 교회처럼 세상 사람들에게 빛을 발하기는 커녕, 오히려 교회로 들어오지 못하도록 문을 닫아버리고 있지는 않는지 돌아보도록 겪게 하시는 일인지 모른다.   *고흐의 그림에 교회가 불이 꺼져 있는 이유

True Prosperity Is the LORD’s Presence  (Genesis 39:1–6)

 

·  Unexpected and unplanned situations also come into a Christian’s life. At times, painful and suffocating seasons last longer than we ever imagined. Yet it is precisely in such moments that genuine believers shine more brightly. The world quickly grows disappointed and complains, and when frustration lingers, it often gives up. But Christians endure quietly because God is with them—and in the end, they bear witness that God is truly alive.

 

1) Prosperity means that, in any situation, the LORD is with us and His will is accomplished.

· God was with Joseph from the very moment he was sold into Egypt. Surely there were many young slaves who were stronger than Joseph and more capable at work. Yet God allowed Joseph—only seventeen years old—to be sold into the house of an Egyptian official. (vv. 1–2)

· We often assume that “prosperity” simply means success and things going well. It is true that such outcomes can follow. But the original meaning of prosperity is this: the LORD God is with you.

*Prosper / “make prosperous” (מַצְלִיחַ, matsliaḥ) comes from the root צָלַח (ṣālaḥ), carrying the sense of “push forward,” “break through,” “advance.”

· What matters is that this prosperity enabled Joseph to overcome even the temptation of Potiphar’s wife. (v. 7) No one was watching—humanly speaking. Yet Joseph knew that the LORD was always with him and saw everything, so he could reject the temptation. (v. 9)

(Afterward: about ten years after being sold as a slave—when Joseph was 27.)

· Potiphar, hearing only his wife’s account, became angry and threw Joseph into prison. What is remarkable is that Joseph’s prosperity appeared even inside the prison: the warden entrusted all the responsibilities of the prison to Joseph. (v. 23)

· The most blessed person is not the one with the most possessions, nor the highest position. The most blessed person is the one with whom God is present. Heaven is not wonderful because it has gold and silver, or because it is adorned with pearls and jewels. Heaven is wonderful because God is there.

· The greatest comfort for believers is this: God is with us. No matter how high the mountain we must climb, when God is with us, it becomes like a small hill behind the house. Even the Red Sea becomes like a shallow stream when God is with us. When we walk with God, a road of hardship can become a joyful road of pilgrimage.

 

2) Everything we go through is ultimately what God uses to fulfill His good purpose.

· Later, in prison, Joseph met the chief cupbearer. Through him, Joseph would interpret Pharaoh’s dreams—and God would raise him up as the governor of Egypt. And because Joseph became governor, God fulfilled the promise He made to Abraham. (Genesis 15:13–14)

· Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream became the turning point that led him to power. Then, during the famine, he met his brothers and his father who came seeking grain. In that moment, even though Joseph could have taken revenge if he wished, he declared, “Do not be distressed… God sent me ahead… for a great deliverance.” (Genesis 45:5, 7–8) If Joseph had repaid evil for evil, the promise God gave Abraham might not have been fulfilled in the same way.

· There is no suffering we endure that is meaningless. If we face it, it is because there is a reason—and because it is necessary. What is certain is this: throughout the process, God walks with us thoroughly. And when the painful season has passed, He enables us to confess, “All of this was what God did so that His good will would be accomplished.”

· Therefore, we must not let our hearts be captured by what happens along the way. We must not fix our eyes only on what lies before us. If we do, we will surely fall into Satan’s schemes. Instead, lift your eyes and look to the God of heaven. Face the situation with the end in view. That means expecting that the Lord will fulfill His good will—and choosing to live as one who blesses, not curses.

· One thing must be remembered: until His good will is completed, we will need deep patience. God’s will is fulfilled only in His time. And until that time, we may continue to undergo tests of faith. In other words, we must not demand quick results.

· The more “reasonless” suffering seems to increase, the longer the season of testing becomes, the greater God’s grace will be afterward. Perhaps the situations the Lord allows us to face today are also meant to help us examine ourselves—whether we have become like the church in Van Gogh’s painting: not shining light to the world, but instead closing the doors, keeping people from coming in.   *why the church is dark in Van Gogh’s painting
