그리스도인의 정체성 (벧전2:9)

 

· 그리스도인들이 자신의 정체성을 확실하게 하지 않을 경우 세상과 교회에서의 삶이 다른 이중적인 삶의 태도를 갖게 된다. 당연히 소속감을 갖지 못하고 죄책감을 갖게 되기도 하는데, 이런 감정들이 심화되어지면 신앙 생활이 도움이 되기는 커녕 오히려 짐이 되어 깊은 우울감에 빠지게 만든다. 

 

1) 성도의 정체성은 네 가지인데 가장 먼저 ‘택하신 족속’이다.

· 택하신 족속(‘γένος ἐκλεκτόν /genos eklekton)은 하나님으로 부터 하나님 나라의 백성으로 택함을 받았다는 말이다. 우리가 하나님 앞에 의로운 백성이 되는 일은 선악 간의 어떤 행동의 결과가 아니라 순전히 하나님의 은혜로우신 선택의 결과임을 말한 것이다.(롬9:11,12)

· 하나님은 에서가 야곱을 섬기게 될 것을 그들이 태어나기도 전에 말씀하셨는데, 이것은 하나님의 택하심이 사람의 행위의 결과가 아니라 당신의 뜻 가운데서 이루어진 것임을 말한다.

· 예정론을 시간의 개념으로 이해하면 결국 숙명론에 빠진다. 예정론의 핵심은 하나님의 은혜로우신 선택의 결과 우리가 하나님 나라의 백성이 되었음을 말하려는 것이다.

· 우리가 선택되었음이 그저 감사한 일일 뿐 그것을 자랑 삼지 않아야 한다. 또한 살아가면서 불평스러운 일을 겪게 될 지라도 그런 일들이 우리로 하여금 하나님의 선택받은 백성이 된 것에 대한 기쁨을 빼앗아가지 않을 수 있다.

 

2) 성도는 ‘거룩한 나라’라고 말한다. 

· 거룩(ἅγιον/하기온)은 원래 ‘구별되다’라는 뜻이다. 여기에는 두 가지의 의미가 있는데, 먼저는 성도들의 소속이 더 이상 세상이 아니라 하나님께 속한 자로 구별되었다는 의미이고, 또 하나는 그렇기 때문에 성도들은 세상 사람들과는 구별된 삶을 살아야 함을 말한 것이다. 

· 여기서 중요한 것은 순서다. 세상과는 구별된 삶을 살아야 하나님께 속한 자가 되는 것이 아니고, 하나님께 속한 자가 되었기에 세상과는 구별되는 삶을 살아야 한다는 것이다. 

· 그러나 출19:5,6의 말씀을 보면 ‘여호와의 말씀을 잘 듣고 언약을 지키는 것이 언약 백성이 되기 위한 조건을 말하는 것처럼 보이지만, 그것은 언약 백성으로서의 책임을 말하는 것이다. 

· ‘이미 이스라엘 백성들을 독수리 날개로 업어 하나님께로 오게 하셨다’는 말씀(출19:4)을 보면, 약속의 말씀을 지켜 행하는 것이 언약 백성이 되는 조건이 아님을 알 수 있다. 이미 하나님의 택하심으로 백성된 자들은 말씀을 잘 지켜 행함으로 언약적 책임을 다해야 함을 말한 것이다.

 

3) 성도는 ‘소유된 백성’이라고 한다. 

· ‘소유(περιποίησιν / peripoiēsin)’란 ‘획득한 재산’이라는 뜻인데, 이것은 우리가 단순히 하나님의 소유물이 되었다는 ownership을 나타내는 것이 아니라, 힘을 들여 얻은 귀히 여기는 것(preservation)을 의미한다. 

· 우리는 보통 사람들이 아니다. 돈이 있고 없고를 떠나서 하나님 앞에 중요한 존재들이다. 나의 존재 확인을 여기에서부터 해야지, 내 주머니 사정 보고 나를 확인 하려고 하면 엉뚱한 결론이 나온다. 나는 비참한 사람이고 하나도 소중한 사람이 아닌 것이다. 그러나 나를 그리스도 안에서 발견하게 되면 나는 지극히 소중한 존재인 것이고, 이것이 나의 자존감을 높이는 것이다. 

· 한번 택한 우리를 뭔가 잘못했다고 금방 포기하고 버리시는 것이 아니라 항상 따뜻한 눈길과 마음을 가지고 지켜보고 계신다.(왕상9:3)     *3개월도 못가는 인간의 사랑

 

4) 우리를 택하시고 소유 삼으신 이유는 우리가 ‘왕같은 제사장’으로 살게 하시기 위함이다. 

· 오늘날 성도들이 다 제사장이라고 하는 것은 먼저 생명의 축복을 받은 우리가 그 은혜들을 가지고 세상 사람들이 하나님과 화목해지는 축복을 얻게 하는 매개자 역할을 하라는 것이다.(고후5:17,18)

· 제사장으로 사는 것은 먼저 은혜의 통로가 되는 것이다. 우리가 세상의 사람들에게 그리스도의 사랑을 나타냄으로 그들이 그 사랑의 빛을 받아 하나님께 나아오게 하는 것이다. 

· 교회는 화평케 하시는 그리스도가 없이는 하나님과 이웃과도 화해할 수 없다는 것을 증거해야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 우리가 먼저 세상에 그 사랑을 전해야 한다. 세상에서 복의 통로로 살되 하나님이 주신 은혜들을 흘려 보내는 것이다.       *누더기 교회가 된 아현 교회의 김현봉 목사님 이야기 

· 또 하나는 세상의 중보자로 사는 일이다. 오늘날 성도들이 그리스도의 은혜가 세상에 흐르게 하는데 있어서 가장 많이 훈련해야 하는 것이 바로 이 부분이다. 우리는 다른 연약한 지체의 모습을 보면 금방 마음 속에 판단을 한다. 그러나 예수님은 연약한 자를 위해 중보하셨다. 오늘날 우리가 신앙이 성숙해진다는 것이 바로 이런 모습을 갖게 되는 것이다.  *레이건의 대통령 후보 토론회에서의 모습(1981년)

· 중보를 한다는 것은 죄와 사람을 분리해서 보는 것이다. 죄는 미워하되 연약함으로 죄를 짓고 있는 사람을 미워해서는 안된다. 지금 그 연약한 지체의 마음을 움직이고 있는 사탄을 미워해야 한다. 그럴 때 오히려 연약한 모습을 보이고 있는 그 지체에 대해서는 긍휼한 마음이 들게 된다. 그리고 그 연약한 지체를 판단하고 미워하는 대신 도리어 그를 위해 중보기도 하고 있을 때 하나님은 우리의 기도를 들으시고 그 연약한 지체를 고치신다.(롬12:19,20)     *한국의 국민가수 조용필 씨의 비련에 얽힌 이야기

2) 오늘 나는 제사장으로 살아가고 있는 지 솔직히 나누어보고, 그렇지 못했다면 어떤 부분을 새해에는 더 새롭게 해야 할 지 나누어보라. 

Christian Identity (1 Peter 2:9)

 

· ‘When Christians fail to establish their identity clearly, they end up living a double life—one way in the world and another way in the church. Inevitably, they lose a sense of belonging and may be burdened with guilt. When these emotions deepen, faith becomes not a help but a weight, pulling them into profound depression.

 

1) There are four aspects of a believer’s identity, and the first is “a chosen people.”

· ‘Chosen people (“γένος ἐκλεκτόν / genos eklekton”) means that we have been chosen by God to be the people of His kingdom. This teaches that becoming a righteous people before God is not the result of any moral achievement or behavioral outcome, but purely the result of God’s gracious choice (Rom. 9:11–12).

· ‘God declared that Esau would serve Jacob even before they were born, showing that God’s choosing is not the product of human works but is accomplished according to His will.

· ‘If we understand predestination merely in terms of time, we will eventually fall into fatalism. The heart of predestination is this: by God’s gracious choice, we have become the people of His kingdom.

· ‘Our being chosen should lead only to gratitude, never to boasting. And even when we face frustrating hardships in life, those things need not steal the joy of knowing we are God’s chosen people.

 

2) Believers are also called “a holy nation.”

· ‘Holy (“ἅγιον / hagion”) originally means “set apart.” It carries two meanings: first, that believers’ allegiance and belonging are no longer to the world but are set apart as those who belong to God; second, therefore, believers must live lives distinct from the world.

· ‘What matters here is the order. We do not become God’s people by living a separated life; rather, because we have become God’s people, we must live a separated life.

· ‘In Exodus 19:5–6, it may seem as though “listening to the LORD’s voice and keeping the covenant” is a condition for becoming covenant people; but it is actually describing the responsibility that comes with being covenant people.

· ‘The statement “I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself” (Exod. 19:4) shows that keeping God’s word is not the condition for becoming covenant people. Those who have already become God’s people by His choosing are called to fulfill covenant responsibility by obeying His word.

 

3) Believers are called “God’s own possession.”

· ‘Possession (“περιποίησιν / peripoiēsin”) means “acquired property,” but it points not merely to ownership—as if we are simply God’s property—but to something dearly obtained and carefully treasured and preserved.

· ‘We are not ordinary people. Regardless of whether we have money or not, we are precious before God. This is where we must begin in confirming our identity. If we define ourselves by our financial situation, we will reach a distorted conclusion: “I am miserable; I am not valuable.” But when we find ourselves in Christ, we discover that we are profoundly precious—and this is what truly strengthens healthy self-worth.

· ‘God does not choose us and then quickly abandon us when we fail. He watches over us with warm eyes and a warm heart (1 Kings 9:3). 

 

4) God chose us and made us His possession so that we would live as “a royal priesthood.”

· ‘When we say that all believers are priests today, it means first that those who have received the blessing of life must, with that grace, serve as mediators through whom the world can receive the blessing of being reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:17–18).

· ‘To live as priests means first to become a channel of grace—revealing the love of Christ to people in the world so that they receive that light and come to God.

· ‘The church must testify that without Christ, who makes peace, reconciliation with God and with our neighbor is impossible. For that, we must first carry that love into the world—living as channels of blessing and letting the grace God has given flow outward.   *The story of Pastor Kim Hyun-bong of Ahyeon Church that became like a “ragged” church.

· ‘Another aspect is living as intercessors for the world. This is an area where believers must be trained the most in allowing Christ’s grace to flow into the world. When we see the weakness of another member, our hearts quickly move to judgment. But Jesus interceded for the weak. Spiritual maturity shows itself in becoming people like that.  *Reagan’s posture in a presidential candidate debate (1981).

· ‘To intercede means to separate the sin from the person: hate the sin, but do not hate the person who sins out of weakness. Hate Satan, who is stirring that person’s heart. Then, instead of contempt, compassion rises within us. And when we stop judging and hating, and instead intercede for that person, God hears our prayers and restores the weak (Rom. 12:19–20).  *The tragic story behind Korea’s national singer Cho Yong-pil.
