너에게 허락한 것을 다 이루기까지 너를 떠나지 아니하리라

본문: 창 28:10-16 

 

· 성도들의 신앙 생활에 있어서 임마누엘이라는 말처럼 힘이 되는 말은 없다. 주저앉고 싶을 때 조차 주께서 함께 하심을 알기에 다시 한번 힘을 낼 수 있다. 불가능해 보여서 이제는 포기하고 싶을 때에도 주께서 허락하신 것을 다 이루실 때까지는 우리를 떠나지 않는다는 것을 알기에 다시 일어설 수 있다. 심지어 이 모든 상황들이 나의 잘못때문에 발생된 일이라 할 지라도 그런 나를 포기하지 않으시는 은혜를 생각할 때 우리는 다시 주님을 향한 삶을 결단할 수 있다. 

 

1) 하나님은 실패한 야곱을 먼저 찾아가신다. 

· 야곱이 인간적인 방법을 쓰지 않아도 하나님이 말씀하신 바는 반드시 이루어질 것이었다. 하지만 야곱은 하나님이 하실 때까지 기다리지 못하고 자신의 노력으로 그것을 이루어 보려 했다. 야곱은 장자의 축복만 받으면 자신에게도 많은 영적 육적 축복들이 올 것이라고 기대했을 것이다. 

· 그러나 야곱에게 돌아온 것은 형 에서의 복수를 피해 하란 땅으로 떠나야 하는 엉뚱한 상황이었다. 야곱은 어머니 리브가의 권유로 에서의 복수를 피하기 위해 외삼촌이 있는 밧단 아람으로 떠나게 된다.(10절) 그는 모든 것을 내려놓고 떠나와야 했던 자신의 삶이 한탄스러웠을 것이다. 무엇보다 새로운 곳에서의 삶에 대한 막연한 두려움도 있었을 것이다..(12,13절)

*‘사닥다리’ = 땅에 있는 죄인과 하늘에 있는 하나님과의 연결 통로가 되어주신 예수 그리스도(요1:51)

· 사실 하나님과 인간 사이에 있는 죄의 문제를 해결하고 하나님과의 관계를 다시 회복시키는 것은 오직 그리스도로만 된다. 안타깝게도 사람들은 하나님이 내려주신 사닥다리를 거부한다. 그러나 어떤 인간의 노력으로도 죄로 인한 한계를 극복할 수 없다. 영적 육적인 궁핍, 미래에 대한 막연한 염려와 두려움들을 이겨낼 수는 없다. 야곱은 그것을 알지 못하고 자신의 노력으로 하늘의 축복을 받으려 했다. 

 

2) 하나님은 야곱에게 다시 한번 아브라함과 이삭에게 하셨던 약속의 말씀을 하신다. 

· 그 약속은 먼저 야곱의 후손이 땅의 티끌과 같이 많게 될 것이라는 말씀이다.  (12,13절) 다만 하나님께서는 이 약속을 이루시기 위해 야곱으로 하여금 애굽으로 이주하여 살게 하셨다. 또한 가장 사랑했던 아들 요셉을 잃는 경험을 해야 했다.   *‘퍼져나간다(‘וּפָרַצְתָּ/ ū·p̄ā·raṣ·tā’ ) = ‘막힌 것을 뚫고 확장되어간다’

· 두번째는 땅의 모든 족속이 야곱과 야곱의 자손으로 말미암아 복을 받으리라는 것이었다.(13,14절)인류의 구원자로 오실 예수 그리스도께서 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱의 후손으로 오실 것을 말씀한 것이다.(갈3:16)  *‘네 자손( וּבְזַרְעֶךָ (ū-ḇə-zar‘eḵā)’ = 야곱의 후손으로 오실 인류의 구원자이신 예수

· 세번째는 하나님은 그 약속이 다 이루어질 때까지 결코 야곱을 떠나지 않겠다는 것이다.(15절)이다. 야곱과 하나님께서 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 관계가 형성된 것임을 말한다.    *함께 한다(עִמָּך/immāḵ) = 결합한다.

· 여기서 ‘너를 돌아오게 하겠다’는 말은 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 사실 야곱에게는 밧단 아람 행이 도피 행각으로 보여질 지 모른다. 하지만 이것은 하나님께서 언약 백성을 보존하시고, 인도하시는, 그래서 약속의 말씀이 성취되도록 하기 위해 하신 특별한 배려의 의미로 이해되어야 한다. 

· 결국 ‘내가 너를 떠나지 않으리라’는 임마누엘의 말씀은 실패한 도망자의 입장에서는 하나님의 동행과 보호의 약속으로 가장 값지고 힘이 되는 말씀이었을 것이다. 이 약속은 모세가 죽은 후에 새로운 지도자 여호수아에게도, 다윗이 죽은 후에 솔로몬에게도, 그리고 예수님이 부활 승천하신 후 남겨진 제자들에게도 주어진 약속의 말씀이었다. 그리고 말할 것도 없이 오늘 이 땅의 삶을 나그네로 살아가는 우리 모두에게도 동일하게 주어진 약속의 말씀이다. 

 

3) 야곱은 비로소 하나님에 대한 깊은 신앙고백과 헌신을 결단하게 된다. 

· 야곱이 하란으로 떠나기 전 브엘 세바에 있을 때의 하나님은 자신이 살고 있는 좁은 영역에서 조금 도움 되시는 하나님 정도로 알고 있었다. 그래서 막상 그가 하란으로 가게 되면 그곳에서도 하나님의 보호와 역사가 있을 수 있을까 의심하게 되었다.

· 그러나 사닥다리 계시를 통해 무소부재하신 하나님께서 자신을 지키시겠다는 약속을 말씀을 다시 한번 확약받고 야곱은 하나님에 대한 깊은 신뢰를 갖게 되었다. 그리고 야곱의 하나님의 대한 신뢰는 곧바로 자신의 삶을 드리기로 헌신하는 것으로 이어진다. 

·  오늘날 우리의 삶에도 절박한 상황에까지 몰고가시는 하나님께서는 다 그만한 이유가 있다. 벼랑 끝에 설 수 있는 용기를 갖게 하시려는 것이다. 그러니 우리에게 필요한 것은 벼랑 끝에 한번 서 보는 것이다. 두려워 떨면서 이도 저도 못하는 가운데 주저 앉아 있지 말고 목숨 걸고 달려들어보아야 한다.

· 오늘 우리가 겪고 있는 삶의 정황도 마찬가지다. 이 길 끝에는 반드시 우리에게 허락하신 것을 다 이루기까지 우리를 지키시고 이끌어가시는 하나님의 은혜를 경험하게 될 것이다. 그리고 그 경험들이 앞으로 남은 인생 전체를 믿음으로 살아가게 하실 것이다.    *말기 암에서 회복된 목사님의 이야기

· 사람이 죽고 사는 것도 하나님께 달려 있다. 그리고 그 생명은 나에게 주어진 사명이 아직 끝나지 않은 한 지켜 주신다. 그러니 우리가 오늘도 마음 두어야 할 것은 이 땅의 나그네 삶을 살면서 하나님이 기뻐하시는 삶이 무엇일까 하는 것이다. (시37:25)

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

· There is hardly any word that strengthens the believer’s life of faith more than “Immanuel.” Even when we feel like collapsing, we can rise again because we know that the Lord is with us. Even when things look impossible and we want to give up, we can stand up once more because we know that He will not leave us until He has fulfilled everything He has promised us. Even if all these situations have arisen because of our own faults, when we remember the grace of the One who does not give up on someone like us, we can once again resolve to live for the Lord.

 

1. God comes first to the failed Jacob.

· Even without Jacob’s human schemes, what God had spoken would certainly have been fulfilled. Yet Jacob could not wait for God to act, and tried to achieve it by his own efforts. He must have expected that once he received the blessing of the firstborn, many spiritual and material blessings would come to him.

· However, what came back to Jacob was an unexpected situation in which he had to flee to the land of Haran to escape Esau’s revenge. At his mother Rebekah’s urging, Jacob left for Paddan Aram, where his uncle lived, in order to avoid Esau’s vengeance (v.10). He must have lamented his life, having to leave everything behind and go. Above all, he must have had a vague fear about life in a new place (vv.12–13). *The ladder = Jesus Christ, who became the way of connection between sinners and God(John 1:51).

· In fact, the problem of sin that stands between God and human beings and the restoration of that relationship can only be resolved through Christ. Tragically, people reject the ladder that God has lowered. Yet no human effort can overcome the limits caused by sin. We cannot conquer our spiritual and material poverty or our vague anxieties and fears about the future. Jacob did not understand this, and tried to obtain the blessing of heaven through his own efforts.

 

2. God once again speaks to Jacob the promises He had given to Abraham and Isaac.

· First, the promise is that Jacob’s descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth (vv.12–13). In order to fulfill this promise, God caused Jacob’s family to migrate and live in Egypt, and he even had to experience losing Joseph, the son he loved most. *Spread out (“וּפָרַצְתָּ / ū·p̄ā·raṣ·tā”) = “to break through what is blocked and expand.”

· Second, God promises that all the families of the earth will be blessed through Jacob and his offspring (vv.13–14). This speaks of Jesus Christ, the Savior of humankind, who would come as the descendant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Gal. 3:16). *“Your offspring” (“וּבְזַרְעֶךָ / ū-ḇə-zar‘eḵā”) = Jesus, the Savior of the world who would come as Jacob’s descendant.

· Third, God promises that He will never leave Jacob until all these promises have been fulfilled (v.15). This means that an inseparable relationship has been formed between Jacob and God.  *“With you” (“עִמָּך / immāḵ”) = to be joined together.

· The words “I will bring you back” carry an important meaning. To Jacob, the journey to Paddan Aram may have looked like a mere flight from danger. But this must be understood as God’s special care to preserve and lead His covenant people so that His promise would be fulfilled.

· Ultimately, the words “I will not leave you,” the Immanuel promise, must have been the most precious and strengthening word to a failed fugitive. This same promise was given to Joshua, the new leader after Moses’ death, to Solomon after David’s death, and to the disciples who were left behind after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension. And needless to say, it is the same promise given today to all of us who live as pilgrims on this earth.

 

3. Jacob finally makes a deep confession of faith and a decision of dedication to God.

· Before leaving for Haran, Jacob had known God in Beersheba only as a God who might help him a little within the narrow sphere of his present life. So when he actually had to go to Haran, he doubted whether God’s protection and work could extend to that place as well.

· But through the revelation of the ladder, he was assured again by the word of promise that the omnipresent God would guard him. Jacob came to have a deep trust in God, and this trust in God immediately led him to dedicate his life to Him.

· In our lives today as well, God has His reasons when He presses us into desperate situations. He wants to give us the courage to stand at the very edge of the cliff. What we need is actually to stand once on that cliff edge. Rather than staying seated, doing nothing, paralyzed by fear and trembling, we must throw ourselves into it, staking our very lives.  *The outcome of a missionary with a brain tumor who began a forty-day fast.

· The same is true of the circumstances we are going through today. At the end of this road, we will certainly experience the grace of God, who guards us and leads us until He has accomplished everything He has promised to us. And those experiences will enable us to live the rest of our lives by faith.

· Life and death are in God’s hands. And that life will be preserved as long as the mission given to us has not yet been completed. Therefore, what we must set our hearts on today, as we live as pilgrims on this earth, is this: “What kind of life pleases God?” (Ps. 37:25).
