앞서 일하시는 하나님 (창24:1–7)

· 본문은 언약의 후손인 이삭의 결혼을 세심하게 준비하신 하나님의 섭리를 보여준다. 그리고 그의 성취를 위해 최선을 다하는 아브라함과 그의 종 엘리에셀의 믿음과 충성된 모습을 볼 수 있다. 그들의 모습을 통해 세상 사람들을 그리스도에게로 인도하는 역할을 해야 할 우리 자신들의 삶을 돌아볼 수 있다. 

 

1) 하나님은 아브라함에게 큰 복을 주심으로 영육 간에 복을 얻게 하셨다. 

· 아브라함이 받은 복은 재물과 같은 육적인 복만을 의미하는 것이 아니라, 궁극적으로는 하나님이 먼저 찾아오셔서 그를 믿음의 조상 되게 하신 복이요, 복의 근원이 되게 하신 복이었다.(1절, 창12:2,3) 전 생애를 통해 이 복이 구체적으로 실현되는 것을 경험한 아브라함은 그 모든 것을 하나님이 하신다는 것을 철저히 믿게 되었고, 이후로는 모든 일을 신앙적인 입장에서 결정하고 행동하게 되었다. 

· 먼저 아브라함은 이삭의 아내를 구할 때 가나안의 족속 중에 구하지 않도록 한다.(3,4절) 이삭이 우상 숭배에 찌들어 있는 가나안의 딸과 결혼함으로 약속의 자녀들이 악에 물들 가능성을 배제한 것이다.

· 훗날 율법에서도 이스라엘이 결혼 할 때는 우상 숭배 행위에 탐닉해 있는 가나안 사람과 하는 것을 금하고 있다. 그리고 이런 요청은 신약 시대에도 동일하게 이어져 온다.  하나님의 특별한 섭리적 허락이 있지 않는 한 믿지 않는 자들과 결혼하는 것을 금하고 있다..(고후6:15) 믿지 않는 자들과 결혼을 하게 되면 복의 통로가 되는 삶(선교적 삶)을 살기는 커녕 자신의 신앙 조차 유지하기 힘들어지기 때문이다. 

· 남편은 모처럼 쉬는 날인데 놀러가자 하고, 아내는 그래도 예배는 드려야 한다고 하면서 많은 갈등을 하다 어느 순간 더 이상 갈등하지 않으려고 타협을 하다 보면 결국 믿음 생활을 잘 해오고 있던 아내 조차 신앙 생활을 한동안 제대로 못하게 된다. 심지어는 한동안 하나님을 떠나 살게 되는 경우도 있다. 

· 아브라함은 또한 여자가 오지 아니하려 한다 하더라도 아들을 그곳으로 다시 데려가지는 말라고 한다.(5,6절) 아브라함은 자신과 가족이 하란 땅을 떠나온 것은 하나님의 명령이었므로, 하나님의 또 다른 지시가 있지 않는 한 가나안을 떠나 다시 그 땅으로 돌아갈 수는 없다고 생각했기 때문이다. 

2) 아브라함이 굳게 믿은 대로 하나님은 자신의 약속을 이루시기 위하여 앞서서 일하셨다. 

· 주인의 명령을 받고 하란으로 떠난 엘리에셀도 먼저 이 모든 과정을 하나님이 주장하여 주실 것을 구한다. 성 중에 있는 여인들이 물을 길러 나올 때 물을 달라고 하면 자신 뿐 아니라 낙타에게도 물을 마시게 하는 여인이 있다면, 그녀가 이삭을 위해 예비한 베필인 것으로 알겠노라 말한다.(12절) 

· 놀랍게도 엘리에셀이 그 말을 마칠 때 이삭의 아내가 될 리브가가 어깨에 물동이를 메고 나온다. 하나님은 과연 아브라함이 믿었던 대로 앞서 행하시는 하나님이셨다. 이어서 그는 리브가의 오빠인 라반과 아버지인 브두엘에게 그녀가 이삭과 혼인할 수 있도록 가나안으로 데려가게 해달라고 요청한다. 엘리에셀이 앞서 일하시는 하나님을 신뢰하지 못했다면 이렇게 단호한 요청을 하지는 못했을 것이다.

· 이런 믿음의 결단에 따른 요청에 대해 하나님은 앞서 일하셨다. 라반과 브두엘은 리브가가 결정하도록 했고, 리브가 역시 가나안으로 갈 것을 결정하게 된다. 하나님께서 그들의 마음을 움직이신 것이다. 

· 이 와중에 라반이 리브가에게 ‘너는 천만인의 어미가 될 것이며, 네 씨가 원수의 성문을 얻게 될 것이라’는 축복의 말을 한 것은(60절) 창22장에서 아브라함에게 축복하신 것으로 궁극적으로 메시야이신 그리스도께서 사탄과의 싸움에서 승리하심으로 온 인류에게 구원의 축복이 주어질 것을 말한 것이다.

· 하나님은 예수 그리스도를 통해 모든 사단의 세력을 무찌르고 열방 가운데 복이 주어지게 하셨다. 그리고 이 일을 위해 가장 먼저 아브라함을 부르시고, 그에게 이삭을 주셨으며, 그 이삭이 후손을 낳도록 지금 리브가와 가족들의 마음을 움직이신 것이다.  *어룬춘(Oroqen)족에게 복음 전하러 갔다가 겪었던 일

3) 하나님은 앞서 일하실 때 믿음을 가지고 나아가는 사람을 통해 역사를 이루어가신다. 

· 아브라함은 이삭의 아내를 가나안 땅에서 구하지 않도록 했다. 또한 그 일로 인해 이삭을 하란 땅으로 가게 하지도 않았다. 하나님께서 사자들을 보내 앞서 이삭의 아내될 여인을 준비하시고 이 모든 일들이 순조롭게 이루어지게 하실 것을 굳게 믿고 있었기 때문이다. 

· 또한 엘리에셀은 먼저 이 모든 일을 하나님께서 주관해주시기를 구했고, 하란 땅에 갔을 때 앞서 행하신 하나님이 리브가를 만나게 하셨을 때 그녀가 하나님이 예비하신 여자임을 금방 눈치 챘다. 또한 일을 서두르다가는 오히려 일을 그르친다고 생각하면서 천천히 일을 진행하는 것이 일반적인 예인데, 엘리에셀은 담대하게 그녀를 가나안으로 데려가겠노라 요청했다.

· 하나님이 앞서서 일하셨을 때 아브라함과 엘리에셀과 같이 그런 하나님을 절대적으로 신뢰한 사람들의 믿음의 결단이 하나님의 역사를 이루어낸다. 오늘날 이 시대에도 하나님은 그런 믿음의 사람들을 찾으신다. 자꾸 현재 상황만을 살피며 망설이는 사람들이 아니라, 믿음으로 결단하며 담대하게 앞으로 나아가는 사람들을 통해 일하신다.     *고린도에서의 믿음의 결단이 낳은 결과 (행18장, 로마서를 기록) 

· 이삭에게 리브가를 인도해가는 종의 모습은 이 시대에 영원한 신랑되신 그리스도에게 신부들을 인도해가는 복음의 일꾼의 모습을 연상하게 한다. 그리스도에게로 신부들을 인도하는 중매쟁이인 우리들에게 필요한 것은 바로 앞서 일하시는 하나님을 신뢰하는 가운데 믿음으로 결단하는 순종이다.(고후11:2)

· 많은 성도들은 지금이 마지막 때라는 것을 인지하지 못하고 살아간다. 우리가 시한부 인생이 되어 남은 시간이 얼마 있지 않다면 어떻게 살 것인지를 생각하며, 여전히 세상 것들 욕심 내며, 즐기며 살아갈까 고민하는 대신, 주님 앞에 섰을 때 할 말이 있도록 의미있는 일들을 결단하기를 소망한다.

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 본문의 이야기 속에 앞서 일하셨던 하나님과, 이에 대해 믿음으로 결단하고 행동했던 아브라함과 엘리에셀의 삶을 설명해보라. 

2) 추수감사절을 맞이하여 내 삶을 축복하시되 앞서 일해 주셨던 하나님에 대해 나누어보고, 그런 하나님에 대해 내가 어떻게 구체적으로 믿음의 결단할 것인지 나누어보자.

 The God Who Goes Before Us (Genesis 24:1–7)

· This passage shows God’s providence in carefully preparing the marriage of Isaac, the heir of the covenant. It also reveals the faith and faithful obedience of Abraham and his servant Eliezer, who did their very best to bring God’s purpose to fulfillment. Through their example we can examine our own lives, we who are called to lead people of the world to Christ.

 

1) God blessed Abraham so that he enjoyed blessing in both body and soul.

· The blessing Abraham received was not merely material wealth; ultimately, it was the blessing that God Himself first came to him, made him the father of faith, and made him the source of blessing. (v.1; Gen 12:2–3) Throughout his entire life Abraham experienced this blessing being concretely fulfilled, and he came to believe thoroughly that all of it was God’s doing. From then on he made his decisions and acted in every matter from a standpoint of faith.

· First, when seeking a wife for Isaac, Abraham made sure she would not be taken from among the Canaanites. (vv.3–4) By doing so, he excluded the possibility that the children of promise would be corrupted by evil through Isaac’s marrying a daughter of Canaan, a people steeped in idolatry.

· Later, in the Law as well, Israel is forbidden to marry the Canaanites, who are addicted to idolatrous practices. And this command continues to apply in the New Testament era as well. Except in cases of God’s very special providential permission, believers are forbidden to marry unbelievers. (2 Cor 6:15) For if one marries an unbeliever, it becomes difficult even to maintain one’s own faith, let alone live as a channel of blessing—a truly missional life.

· Imagine a husband saying on his rare day off, “Let’s go out and have some fun,” while the wife insists, “We should at least go to worship.” After many such conflicts, she may eventually compromise simply to avoid the struggle. Then even the wife, who had been walking faithfully with the Lord, may find herself unable to maintain her spiritual life for a time, and may even live far from God.

· Abraham also instructs that even if the woman is unwilling to come back with the servant, Isaac must not be taken back to that land. (vv.5–6) Abraham understood that his departure—and that of his family—from Haran had been in obedience to God’s command, and therefore, unless God gave another clear instruction, they could not leave Canaan and return to that land.

 

2) Just as Abraham believed, God went ahead of him to fulfill His promise.

· Having received his master’s command and set out for Haran, Eliezer first prays that God would take charge of the entire process. He asks that when the young women of the city come out to draw water, if he asks one of them for a drink and she offers water not only to him but also to his camels, he may know that she is the one prepared as a bride for Isaac. (v.12)

· Remarkably, while Eliezer is still speaking, Rebekah—who is to become Isaac’s wife—comes out with her jar on her shoulder. Truly, God was the One who goes before, exactly as Abraham had believed. Eliezer then asks Rebekah’s brother Laban and her father Bethuel to allow him to take her to Canaan so that she may marry Isaac. Had Eliezer not trusted the God who goes before, he could not have made such a bold request.

· In response to this request, which flowed from a decision of faith, God worked ahead of them. Laban and Bethuel leave the decision to Rebekah herself, and Rebekah likewise chooses to go to Canaan. God had moved their hearts.

· In the midst of all this, Laban pronounces a blessing over Rebekah, saying, “Our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your offspring possess the gate of those who hate him.” (v.60) This ultimately echoes the blessing given to Abraham in Genesis 22 and points forward to Christ, the promised Messiah, who would triumph over Satan and bring the blessing of salvation to all humanity.

· Through Jesus Christ, God has crushed all the powers of Satan and poured out blessing among the nations. For this purpose God first called Abraham, gave him Isaac, and is now moving the hearts of Rebekah and her family so that Isaac may have offspring.  *Experience while preaching the gospel to the Oroqen

 

3) God accomplishes His work through those who move forward in faith.

· Abraham would not allow a wife for Isaac to be taken from the land of Canaan, nor would he permit Isaac to be taken back to Haran because of this matter. He firmly believed that God would send His angel ahead of him, prepare the woman who would become Isaac’s wife, and cause everything to proceed smoothly.

· Likewise, Eliezer first asked that God Himself would govern this entire matter. When he arrived in Haran and the God who goes before led him to Rebekah, he quickly discerned that she was the woman God had prepared. And whereas most people would think that rushing things might ruin them and therefore move slowly, Eliezer boldly requested that he be allowed to take her at once to Canaan.

· When God goes before, it is the decisions of faith made by people like Abraham and Eliezer—people who absolutely trust Him—that bring about God’s work. Even today God is searching for such people of faith. He does not work through those who keep hesitating as they fixate only on their present circumstances, but through those who make decisions in faith and move forward courageously. *The result that came from a decision of faith in Corinth(Acts 18)

· The servant leading Rebekah to Isaac gives us a picture of gospel workers in this age who lead brides to Christ, the eternal Bridegroom. What we need, as matchmakers who bring brides to Christ, is obedient faith that decisively trusts the God who goes before us. (2 Cor 11:2)  *Miraculous healing of Yoo Yeol 

· Many believers live without realizing that these are the last days. If we knew we had only a limited amount of time left to live, as if under a terminal diagnosis, how would we live? Rather than craving and enjoying the things of this world and agonizing over how to get more of them, may we decide to devote ourselves to meaningful things so that we will have something to say when we stand before the Lord.
