신앙적 선택이 가져온 결과 (창13:5-10)

 

· 오늘날 신앙인들 조차 그 선택이 중요한 선택인지 아닌지 조차 잘 모르는 가운데 너무 쉽게 결정하거나, 혹은 잘못된 기준을 가지고 결정을 하는 경우들이 많다. 그저 눈에 보기에 좋은 대로 결정했다가 한동안 어려움 가운데 처하게 되는 것이다. 

· 그리스도인들에게는 감사하게도 설사 잘못된 선택을 해서 그것 때문에 한동안 어려움을 겪게 되는 일은 있을 지라도, 결국에는 그 모든 일들을 통해 선하신 뜻을 이루어 내시고야 마는 하나님이 계시다. 

 

1) 아브람은 하나님이 약속하신 가나안 땅에 기근이 들자 곧 떠났다. 

· 하나님이 약속하신 땅에도 기근은 있다. 그러나 하나님은 이스라엘의 목자가 되셔서 쉴만 한 물가로, 푸른 초장으로 인도하실 것이었다. 그러나 아브라함은 그런 하나님을 신뢰하지 못함으로 그 땅을 떠난 것이다.

· 마침내 애굽에 내려가서는 자신의 생명이 위협 받을 것을 두려워한 나머지 아내 사라를 누이라 속였다. 아내 때문에 자신의 생명이 위태로워질 것을 걱정한 것이다. 그리고 그 댓가로 바로 왕은 아브라함에게 선물을 준다.

· 그러나 하나님께서는 자신이 한 약속이 있기에 사래가 바로 왕에게 팔려가지 않도록 막아 주셨다. 만약 사래가 바로 왕의 첩이 된다면 아브라함의 후손으로 오실 예수 그리스도를 통해 온 인류가 복을 받게 하시겠다는 약속도 이루어질 수 없었을 것이기 때문이다. 

· 그럼으로 우리는 이 사실을 굳게 믿어야 한다. 어떤 일들이 우리 인생 가운데 벌어져도, 인류의 역사 가운데 어떤 불행한 일들이 벌어져도 결국은 세상을 향한 하나님의 선한 계획은 이루어지는 것이고, 그 선상에서 오늘 우리 개개인의 삶의 문제들도 바라보아야 한다.

 

2) 하나님의 은혜를 경험을 한 아브람은 이제 구체적인 삶의 변화를 보인다. 

·  조카 롯의 목자들과 자신의 목자들이 다툴 때 서로 헤어지기로 하되 아브라함은 결정권을 조카에게 양보한다.(9절) 또한 아브라함은 조카 롯이 사로잡혔다는 소식을 듣고 집에서 길리운 군사 318명을 데리고 그를 구하러 간다.(창14:14,16) 

· 나중에 요단 지역으로 이주한 롯은 소돔과 가까운 곳에 자리를 잡고 살게 되었다. 그러나 소돔과 고모라는 악행으로 유명했고, 결국 이 지역은 죄악으로 인해 하나님의 심판을 받게 된다. 그 때 아브라함은 롯의 안전을 위해 간절히 하나님께 중보 기도를 드린다.

· 이런 일련의 과정들은 아브라함이 얼마나 변화되었는가를 보여주는 것이다. 그리고 그가 이렇게 변화된 이유는 이전의 사건들을 통해 하나님의 무조건적인 사랑을 경험했기 때문이었다. 자신은 잘못을 저질렀지만 하나님은 그런 아브라함을 용서해주시고, 용서해 주실 뿐 아니라 오히려 은금이 풍부하게 돌아올 수 있게 하신 은혜를 경험했기 때문이다. 

· 사실 하나님께서도 우리가 잘못 살아가고 있을 때 그런 우리의 잘못을 깨닫게 하기 위해 벌을 내리신다. 그런데 하나님은 어떤 때는 그 죄를 모른 척하실 때도 있고, 오히려 자격도 없는 우리들에게 과분한 축복을 부어주시기도 한다. 그것은 그런 자비와 사랑을 경험한 우리 역시 세상을 향해 그런 사랑을 나타내도록 하시려는 것이다. 

 

3) 아브라함의 신앙적 결단은 놀라운 하나님의 축복을 경험하게 되는 계기가 되었다. 

· 아브라함은 조카 롯을 구하러 가면서 고작 318명의 군사로 수천 수만의 연합군을 이겼다. 이런 경험은 아브라함으로 하여금 어떤 절망할 수 밖에 없는 상황에서도 철저히 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있는 믿음을 갖게 하는 일이었을 것이다.

· 무엇보다도 감사한 일은 조카 롯에게 먼저 좋은 땅을 선택할 수 있도록 양보한 결과 오히려 하나님이 약속하신 축복의 땅을 얻게 되었다는 것이다. 

· 하나님의 자비와 사랑을 기억하면서 그리스도의 사랑을 나타내고자 결단 했을 때, 그 결과는 의도치 않는 축복이 임하기도 하며, 무엇보다도 영적인 축복을 얻게 되는 것이다. 

· 성경은 정욕은 영과 육을 파멸시키는 불길이라고 말한다. 순간의 쾌락과 욕심을 좇아 사는 삶은 얼듯 보기에는 달콤해보이지만 결국 마음을 더욱 메마르게 하고, 영혼을 더욱 어둡게 만든다. 

· 그리스도인의 마땅한 삶은 하나님의 부르심에 신앙적 결단을 하는 것이다. 그 결단은 앞 뒤를 재지 않는 것이다. 그저 하나님의 부르심에 따르는 것이다. 내가 할만한 것이기에 하는 것은 순종이 아니다. 그저 잘 준비된 선택일 뿐이다. 신앙적 결단에 의한 순종은 손해를 감수하더라도 기꺼이 하는 것이다.   *엘리자베스를 거부한 짐 엘리엇의 마음(딤후2:4)

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 하나님께서 아브라함의 아내 사래를 지켜주시고, 오히려 은금을 풍부하게 해주신 이유는 무엇인가?

2) 신앙적 결단으로 순종의 삶을 살고자 할 때 하나님이 주시는 축복이 무엇이었는 지 나누어보고, 이와 관련하여 최근 나의 삶에 어떤 결단을 해야 할 것인지 나누어보라. 

  The Outcomes of a Faith-Based Choice (Genesis 13:5–10)

·  Even believers today often make decisions too easily—without discerning whether the choice is truly weighty—or they decide by the wrong standards. Choosing merely by what looks appealing can land us in seasons of hardship.

·  For Christians, there is this grace: even when a wrong choice leads to a period of difficulty, God still brings His good purpose to pass through it all.

 

1) When famine came to the land God had promised, Abram left it at once.

·  Even in the promised land there can be famine. Yet the Lord would have shepherded Israel to quiet waters and green pastures. Because Abram did not trust such a God, he left the land.

·  When he went down to Egypt, fearing for his life, he deceived others by calling his wife Sarai his sister. Worried that his wife might endanger his life, he accepted gifts from Pharaoh in return.

·  But God, bound by His promise, prevented Sarai from being handed over to Pharaoh. Had she become Pharaoh’s concubine, the promise—that all nations would be blessed through the coming of Jesus Christ from Abram’s line—could not have stood.

·  Therefore we must hold this as a settled conviction: whatever happens in our lives or in human history, God’s good plan for the world will be fulfilled; in that light we should also view our personal troubles today.

 

2) Having tasted God’s grace, Abram began to show concrete change.

·  When strife broke out between Lot’s herdsmen and his own, he proposed they separate and yielded the right of first choice to his nephew (v. 9). Later, hearing that Lot had been taken captive, Abram mustered the 318 trained men of his household and rescued him (Gen 14:14, 16).

·  After relocating to the Jordan plain, Lot settled near Sodom. But Sodom and Gomorrah were notorious for evil and ultimately fell under God’s judgment. At that time Abraham interceded earnestly for Lot’s safety.

·  These episodes reveal how profoundly Abraham had changed. Why? Because through earlier events he had experienced God’s unconditional love—though he had acted wrongly, God forgave him and, beyond forgiveness, sent him back enriched with silver and gold.

·  God also disciplines us to expose our wrong paths. Yet at times He overlooks our sins and even pours out undeserved blessings—so that those who have tasted such mercy will in turn display that same love to the world.

 

3) Abraham’s faith-driven decisions became gateways to astonishing blessing.

·  With only 318 men he defeated a vast coalition to rescue Lot. Such a victory would have anchored his trust in God even in seemingly hopeless situations.

*This helps explain how Abraham could offer Isaac on Moriah (Gen 22).

·  Most striking of all, by yielding the better land to Lot, he himself received the very land God had promised.

·  When we remember God’s mercy and resolve to display Christ’s love, unexpected blessings often follow—and above all, we receive spiritual blessing.

·  Scripture teaches that lust is a consuming flame that destroys both body and soul. A life chasing momentary pleasure may look sweet but ultimately dries the heart and darkens the soul.

·  The Christian life is to answer God’s call with faith-filled decisions—not calculating costs, but following simply because He calls. Doing only what seems manageable is not obedience; it is merely a well-prepared choice. Obedience born of faith accepts loss, if need be, with gladness.
