바벨탑을 쌓은 인간들을 흩으신 하나님 (Genesis 11:1–9)

 

· 창1장 부터 12장 까지가 성경 전체의 서론이라고 하는 이유는 3장의 아담의 불순종 사건, 4장의 가인의 살인 사건, 6장의 노아의 홍수 사건, 그리고 11장의 바벨탑 사건들이 창조와 타락과 심판과 구속이라고 하는 성경적 세계관을 잘 보여주고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 확실한 성경적 세계관을 정립한다는 것은 우리 자신들 뿐 아니라 악해져 가는 세상 가운데 구원의 빛이 되는데 꼭 필요한 일이다.  

* ‘인류를 향한 신적 계획은 없고, 신은 죽었다’(프리드리히 니체)

 

1) 하나님을 떠나있던 자들은 자신들의 지혜를 모아 하나님께 반역했다. 

· 홍수 심판 후 하나님의 은혜로 살아남은 노아와 그의 가족들은 심판을 경험한 직후에는 자신들이 미약한 존재임을 인식하고 하나님 앞에 겸손한 생활을 하고 있었다. 그러나 시간이 흐를수록 마음 속에 묻혀있던 죄악된 본성이 살아나 점점 하나님을 대적하기 시작했다.   

*육식을 함으로 하나님을 대적한 사냥꾼 니므롯(창10:8,9) 

· 바벨탑은 한마디로 하나님으로부터 독립하여 하나님을 대적해보려는 죄의 상징이었다. 먼저 그들은 하늘에 닿고자 함으로 하나님의 영역에 도전하는 죄를 범했다. 그러나 하나님께서는 이러한 인간에게 음부에까지 낮아질 것이라 말한다. (마11:23)   *펜타곤의 미래 전쟁 시뮬레이션의 결과

· 또한 바벨탑 사건을 통해 나타나는 인간의 죄악은 자신의 ‘이름을 내자’는 것이었다. 사실 인간들은 자신의 이름이 높아지는 것을 좋아하는 교만한 본성이 있다. 하나님 보다는 자신의 이름을 내어 하나님께서 받으셔야 할 영광을 자신들이 가로채는 것이다.  

*사울왕이 아말렉과의 전쟁에서 이기고 기념비를 세운 이유(삼상15:12) 

· ‘그 일은 내가 한 거야!’ 와 같은 말은 하지 않는 것이 좋다. ‘나’ 라는 주어가 필요할 때는 ‘잘못했다’고 말할 때 뿐이다. 내가 드러나면 하나님이 보여지지 않고 하나님의 영광을 가로채는 것이 된다. 

· 그런 사람들은 자신이 인정받지 못한 것 같고, 대우 받지 못하고 무시당했다고 생각하면 괜히 마음이 불쾌해지고 언짢아 진다. 그리고 그것은 자신 안에 바벨탑을 쌓았던 사람들의 마음이 있다는 증거이다.   하나님은 우리 안에 그런 마음이 있다는 것을 확인시켜주기 위해 내가 지금 많이 섭섭한 상황에 처하게 하신 것이다. 그리고 오늘과 같은 말씀을 듣게 하신다.   *바울의 자랑거리는 날마다 죽는 것(고전15:31)

 

2) 육신적인 욕망을 위한 삶은 결국 하나님의 심판을 초래했다. 

· 하나님은 애초에 사람들에게 온 땅에 충만하여 번성하라고 하셨다. 그러나 인간들은 흩어져서 생존을 위협 받기 보다는 함께 모여서 자신들의 원하는 바를 추구하기를 원했다.(4절) 

· 오늘날 하나님께서 그리스도인을 부르신 것도 그들만 은혜를 누리고 평안하게 살라고 하신 것이 아니라, 먼저 은혜를 받은 자들이 세상에 나가 아직 그리스도의 사랑을 맛보지 못한 자들에게 그 사랑을 전하라고 한 것이다.

· 따라서 교회는 모여서 열심히 예배만 은혜롭게 드리기만 하면 되는 것이 아니라, 이제 각자 삶의 현장과 세상 끝까지 흩어져서 그리스도의 사랑을 삶을 증거하는 교회이다. 

· 하나님께서는 바벨탑을 쌓던 인간들이 하나님을 떠나 자신의 이름을 내고자 하는 짓들을 이미 다 알고 계셨다.(5절) 그리고 마침내 그들의 언어를 혼잡하게 하여 그들을 흩으졌다. (7,8절)

 

3) 하나님은 심판 가운데서도 긍휼을 베푸시는 분이시다. 

· 하나님을 대적하며 자기 이름을 내고자 바벨탑을 쌓던 인간들을 흩어 버리신 가운데서도 자기 백성들을 모으신 것이다. 그리고 그것은 바로 믿음의 조상이라고 하는 아브라함을 통해 이루어졌다. 

· 하나님은 하나님의 통치와 다스림을 받는 이스라엘을 아브라함의 후손으로 오실 예수 그리스도를 통해 온 세상에서 부르시겠다고 약속하셨다. 창12:3 후반부에 나오는 ‘땅의 모든 족속이 너로 말미암아 복을 얻을 것이라’는 말씀의 원문을 직역하면 ‘그가 복을 얻을 것이다, 너 안에서, 땅의 모든 족속들이’이다. 따라서 이 말씀은 아브라함의 후손으로 오실 예수님을 통해 그 일을 이루시겠다는 것이다. 

* ‘너로 말미암아’ = ‘너 안에서’ 

· 예수님의 족보를 ‘아브라함과 다윗의 자손 예수 그리스도의 계보’라고 말씀하는 이유는 예수님이 아브라함과 약속한 대로 아브라함의 후손으로(창12:3) , 또 다윗에게 약속한 대로(삼하7:12) 다윗의 후손으로 오신 것을 말씀한 것이다. 

· 중요한 사실은 하나님께서 자기 백성들을 부르시기 위해 하시는 일들 중에는 정든 고향을 떠나야 하는 일이 있고, 심지어 누군가가 세상을 떠나는 일도 있다는 것이다. 그저 있으면 편하고 정든 상황을 떠나지 않으면 하나님만 바라보지 않게 되기 때문이다. 

· 만약 내가 오늘도 섭리적인 고난 가운데 있다면, 분명 하나님은 나 자신을 더욱 온전한 구원에 이르도록, 더 나아가서는 내 주변의 사람들을 구원시키도록 나의 삶을 이끌어 가시는 것임을 기억해야 한다. 그리고 이런 하나님의 섭리를 눈치챈다면 우리는 자신의 삶에 나타난 고통과 애매한 고난에 대해 좀 더 인내함으로 감당해 갈 수 있을 것이다.     *탈북민들을 도피자의 상황에 처하게 하신 이유(사66:19)

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 바벨탑을 쌓던 인간들의 모습을 통해 보여지는 죄에 대해 설명해보라. 

2) 흩으셨던 인간들 중에 하나님의 나라 백성들을 다시 부르시는 과정을 통해 복음의 역사 속에서 어떤 일들이 일어날 수 있는 지 설명해보고, 자신의 현재의 삶에 적용해서 나누어보라. 

God Who Scattered the People Who Built the Tower of Babel 

(Genesis 11:1–8)

 

· The reason why chapters 1 through 12 of Genesis are called the introduction to the entire Bible is because the events of Adam’s disobedience in chapter 3, Cain’s murder in chapter 4, Noah’s flood in chapter 6, and the Tower of Babel in chapter 11 clearly show the biblical worldview of creation, fall, judgment, and redemption. Therefore, establishing a clear biblical worldview is essential not only for ourselves but also for becoming the light of salvation in an increasingly evil world.

*“There is no divine plan for humanity; God is dead.” (Friedrich Nietzsche)

 

1) Those who were separated from God gathered their own wisdom to rebel against Him.

· After the flood judgment, Noah and his family, who survived by God’s grace, at first recognized their frailty and lived humbly before God. However, as time passed, their sinful nature buried deep in their hearts revived, and they gradually began to oppose God.

*Nimrod, the hunter who opposed God by eating meat (Gen 10:8–9)

· The Tower of Babel was, in short, a symbol of sin—an attempt to become independent from God and oppose Him. First, they committed the sin of trying to reach heaven, thereby challenging God’s realm. But God said that such people would be brought down to the depths of Hades. (Matt 11:23) *Result of the Pentagon’s future war simulation

· Another sin shown through the Tower of Babel was the desire to “make a name for ourselves.” In fact, humans have a prideful nature that loves to elevate their own name. They steal the glory that rightfully belongs to God for themselves by exalting their own name instead of His.   *The reason King Saul set up a monument after defeating the Amalekites (1 Sam 15:12)

· It is best not to say things like “That was my doing!” The only time you should use “I” is when you say “I was wrong.” If “I” is exalted, God is hidden, and His glory is stolen.

· Such people feel dissatisfied and offended when they think they have not been recognized, treated well, or respected. This is evidence that the same spirit that built the Tower of Babel is present in their hearts. God allows us to face situations that make us feel overlooked so that we can see this within ourselves. He lets us hear messages like today’s for this very reason. 

*Paul’s boast was that he died daily (1 Cor 15:31)

 

2) A life driven by fleshly desires ultimately brings about God’s judgment.

· From the beginning, God commanded people to fill the earth and multiply. But instead of dispersing and risking survival, humans wanted to gather together to pursue what they wanted (v.4).

· Likewise, God calls Christians not so they can enjoy grace and live in comfort for themselves, but so that those who first received grace would go out into the world and share Christ’s love with those who have yet to taste it.

· Therefore, the church is not just a place to gather and worship fervently but is meant to scatter to the ends of the earth, testifying to Christ’s love in daily life.

· God already knew what the people building the Tower of Babel were doing in leaving Him and seeking to make a name for themselves (v.5). Ultimately, He confused their language and scattered them (vv.7–8).

 

3) God is One who shows mercy even in judgment.

· Even as He scattered those who opposed Him and sought to make a name for themselves by building the Tower of Babel, God gathered His people. This was fulfilled through Abraham, the forefather of faith.

· God promised that He would call all nations into His rule and reign through Jesus Christ, who would come as a descendant of Abraham. A literal translation of the latter part of Genesis 12:3—“All peoples on earth will be blessed through you”—is “They will be blessed, in you, all peoples of the earth.” This shows that God would fulfill this promise through Jesus, who would come as Abraham’s descendant.  *“Through you” = “In you”

· The reason Jesus’ genealogy is called “the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham” is to show that Jesus came as the promised descendant of Abraham (Gen 12:3) and the descendant of David (2 Sam 7:12).

· An important fact is that, in God’s work of calling His people, He sometimes requires them to leave familiar homelands, and sometimes even allows someone to pass away. If people remain too comfortable in familiar surroundings, they may fail to look only to God.

· If today I find myself in the midst of providential suffering, I must remember that God is leading my life not only to bring me to complete salvation but also to save those around me. And if we perceive this providence, we can endure the pain and uncertain suffering in our lives with greater patience.
