소 귀에 경 읽기 Revelation 2:18–23

· 하나님의 말씀인 성경은 불경과는 다르게 하나님의 은혜로 성령이 임한 자에게는 누구에게나 깨달아지는 진리다. 중요한 것은 깨닫는 것이 아니라, 그 말씀대로 살아 가느냐 이다. 아무리 말씀을 많이 알고 깊이 깨달아도, 그 말씀대로 살아가지 못한다면 그것이야말로 소 귀에 경 읽기이다.

 

1) 두아디라 교회는 공업이 발달했지만 우상 숭배가 있었던 곳이다. 

· 두아디라는 현재는 '아킷살'로 불리우는 도시다. 이곳은 버가모와 서머나의 중간 지점에 위치해 있다. 주전 190년 경 로마의 식민지가 되었다.  두아디라는 공업이 발달하여 도시 안에 동업자들의 조합이 생길 정도였다.     *바울이 빌립보에서 만난 자주 장사 루디아가 두아디라 출신

· 두아디라 역시 태양신 '아폴로'나 '아데미' 신을 섬겼다. 특별히 두아디라에는 이 신들을 섬기는 ‘삼바데’라고 불리는 여자 무당이 많았다. 이런 도시에 교회가 어떻게 설립되었는지는 정확하게 알 수 없으나 바울이 에베소에 머물 때 그 도시에 가서 전도함으로 세워졌거나, 루디아가 복음을 그곳에 전달하여 세워졌을 것으로 추측된다.

 

2) 두아디라 교회에 대한 칭찬은 그들의 사랑과 섬김이 있는 선한 행위였다.

· 주님이 칭찬한 그들의 ‘사업’은 비즈니스가 아니고 그들의 선한 행위였다.  사업이라는 단어는 헬라어로는 '에르가' 인데 이는 '행위(deeds)'로 해석될 수 있다.

· 두아디라가 보여주었던 행위는 먼저 믿음에서 출발한 사랑이다. 한국어 본문은 그냥 사랑과 믿음이라고 말하고 있지만, 영어 성경에는 너의 사랑과 믿음으로 되어 있는데, 사랑의 특성이 믿음에서 근거한 것이어야 함을 의미한다고 할 수 있다.

· 예수님께서는 우리에게 ‘내가 너희를 사랑한 것같이 너희도 다른 사람들을 사랑하라’ 고 명령하시지만 그것은 정말 쉽지 않다.(요13:34) 그래서 오늘 본문은 우리에게 믿음이 필요하다고 한 것이다. 죄인이었던 나를 먼저 사랑해주셨던 주님을 믿음으로 내가 구원 얻었음을 기억해야 하기 때문이다. 

· 또한 원수까지도 사랑할 수 있으려면 내가 원수 같은 인간도 사랑해줄 때, 주님께서 저들을 변화시키시고 저들의 영혼이 구원받게 하실 것이라는 믿음이 있어야 한다. (롬12: 17,18,20)  하나님이 하실 것이라는 믿음이 없으면 절대로 원수를 사랑하지 못한다. 

· 두번째로 그들의 행위에 대한 칭찬은 인내 가운데 하는 섬김이다. 바울은 수고하는 농부의 비유를 통해 열매가 있으려면 섬김의 수고가 있어야 한다고 말한다.(딤후2:6)    *사역 중심의 소그룹

· 농부의 비유에서 한 가지 더 깨달아야 할 것은 농부의 수고가 하루 아침에 열매를 가져오지는 않는다는 것이다. 실제로 섬김에도 인내가 필요하다. 설교에 도전 받고 섬김의 삶에 대한 결단을 해도 어느 순간 섬김을 포기하고 싶게 되기 때문이다. 

3) 두아디라 교회에 대한 책망은 이세벨을 용납함으로 행음과 우상 숭배를 하게 만들었다는 것이다. 

· 두아디라 교회의 이세벨 같은 여선지자는 그곳에 성행했던 조합들을 속여 그들로 하여금 우상의 제물을 먹게 하고 성적 부도덕에 빠지게 했다. 그 신들을 숭배하고 성전 창기들과 성적 관계를 가지면 풍요로운 삶을 살게 될 것이라는 거짓 가르침을 퍼뜨렸을 것이다. 

· 두아디라 교회의 진짜 문제는 그들이 음행과 우상 숭배에 빠져 있는 가운데, 하나님께로 부터 경고를 받았으면서도 돌이키지 않고 있었다는 것이다.(21절)

·  그런데 진짜 문제는 경고의 말씀을 듣고도 회개하지 않는다는 것이다. 우상 숭배란 사람이든 세상의 것이든 하나님 보다 더 소중하게 생각하고 그것들을 더 신뢰하는 것이며, 그리스도인의 삶의 출발은 예배임으로 예배를 소홀히 하면 나의 삶 전체가 무너질 가능성이 있다는 말씀을 들었어도 돌이키지 않는다. 

· 하지만 하나님은 기다리시지만 않으신다..(22절) 여기서 침상(클리넨)'은 환자용 침상을 말하는데,  우상 숭배를 하는 데 쓰여졌던 상이나 음행을 행했을 때 쓰여졌던 침상이 환자용 침상으로 바뀌어 질것을 말한 것이다.          *솔로몬 후에 나라가 둘로 쪼개진 이유(왕상11:9-11)

· 우리의 삶에도 하나님은 곧바로 대적자들을 일으키시거나, 곧바로 고통스러운 상황을 주시지 않는다. 먼저 말씀을 듣게 하신다. 또 상황을 통해 뭔가 위기 의식을 느끼게 하신다. 그런데도 여전히 나를 돌이키지 않으면 정말로 주께서 손을 대신다. 

· 예수님은 그 눈이 불꽃 같고 그 발이 주석 같아서 우리의 생각과 감정을 다 꿰뚫어보시고, 한번 그 발로 밟으시면 막아낼 자가 없게 된다. (18절)       *청동의 원료로 쓰인 주석 

·  그러나 이 말씀을 무섭게만 생각할 일이 아니다. 우리의 삶을 진지하게 돌아보고 음행을 일삼았거나 하나님 보다 세상을 더 좋아하고 신뢰했다면 이제 라도 돌이키면 되는 일이다. 그러면 주님께서는 우리의 모든 죄악된 일을 잊으실 뿐 아니라 모든 불의에서 우리를 건져내신다.(요일1:9)

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 두아디라 교회가 칭찬 받았던 사랑과 섬김은 각각 어떤 사랑과 섬김이었는 지 나누어보자.

2) 내 주변에 계속해서 대적자들이 생겨나고, 환난들이 이어지는 이유가 내가 주님의 경고를 애써 외면하고 있어서 그런 것은 아닌지 돌아보는 가운데, 말씀을 들으면서 어떤 사랑과 섬김을 결단하게 되었는 지 나누어보자. 

Preaching to Deaf Ears (Revelation 2:18–23)

 

· The Word of God, the Bible, unlike secular scriptures, is truth that can be understood by anyone who has received the Holy Spirit through God's grace. What matters is not merely understanding, but living according to that Word. No matter how much one knows or deeply understands the Word, if one does not live it out, then it is truly like "preaching to deaf ears."

 

1) The City of Thyatira Was an Industrial Hub but Full of Idolatry

· Thyatira, now known as Akhisar, was located between Pergamum and Smyrna. Around 190 BC, it became a Roman colony. It was an industrial city where trade guilds had formed due to the development of various crafts.  *Lydia, a seller of purple cloth whom Paul met in Philippi, was from Thyatira.

· The city worshiped sun gods such as Apollo and Artemis. In particular, it had many female shamans known as "Sambathê" who served these deities.

· It is not clear exactly how the church in Thyatira was established, but it is speculated that Paul may have evangelized there while staying in Ephesus, or Lydia may have spread the gospel there herself.

 

2) Praise for the Church in Thyatira: Their Love and Service Were Good Deeds

· The “works” the Lord praised were not business endeavors, but their good deeds. The Greek word for “works” is erga, meaning "deeds."

· The church’s actions stemmed from love rooted in faith. While the Korean Bible says simply “love and faith,” the English versions say “your love and faith,” implying that their love was based on faith.

· Jesus commanded us, “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34), but this is not easy. That’s why today’s passage stresses the need for faith—because we must remember that we are saved through believing in the One who loved us first, even while we were still sinners.

· To love even our enemies, we must have faith that when we love those who seem unlovable, God can transform them and bring salvation to their souls (Romans 12:17, 18, 20). Without faith that God will act, we can never love our enemies.

· Secondly, their service was praiseworthy because it was done with endurance. Paul used the example of a hardworking farmer to show that fruit only comes through the labor of service (2 Timothy 2:6).

*Ministry-centered small groups

· From the farmer analogy, we must also realize that fruit does not come overnight. Serving others also requires patience. Even when we are inspired by a sermon and resolve to live a life of service, we may later feel tempted to give up.

 

3) The Rebuke to the Church in Thyatira: They Tolerated Jezebel, Leading to Sexual Immorality and Idolatry

· A Jezebel-like prophetess in Thyatira manipulated the trade guilds to lead believers into eating food sacrificed to idols and into sexual immorality. She spread false teachings, claiming that worshiping those gods and engaging with temple prostitutes would lead to a prosperous life.

· The real issue was not just their sin, but that even after receiving a warning from God, they did not repent (v.21).

· Idol worship is not limited to statues—it is treating anyone or anything as more important and trustworthy than God. Worship is the foundation of a Christian life. If worship is neglected, our entire life can collapse—even if we hear this warning, we often still do not turn back.

· But God does not wait forever (v.22). The “bed” (kliné) mentioned here refers to a sickbed. The very bed used for idol worship and sexual immorality will become a sickbed of suffering.

*Why the kingdom was divided after Solomon (1 Kings 11:9–11)

· In our lives too, God does not immediately send adversaries or suffering. First, He lets us hear His Word and sense danger through circumstances. But if we still do not turn back, then He will indeed act.

· Jesus' eyes are like blazing fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze—He sees through all our thoughts and emotions. Once He treads something down, nothing can resist (v.18).

· Yet, we should not view this Word only as frightening. If we honestly examine ourselves and realize we have lived in sin or loved the world more than God, we simply need to repent. Then, the Lord not only forgives all our sins but also delivers us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

 

Study and Application Questions:

1) The church in Thyatira was praised for their love and service. Let’s discuss what kind of love and what kind of service these were.

2) Consider whether the reason adversaries and hardships continue to arise around you is because you are ignoring the Lord’s warnings. As you reflect on this and listen to His Word, share what kind of love and service you’ve decided to commit to.
