기다림의 미학

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  기다림의 미학 계 3:7-10 

 

· 우리 인생은 기다림의 연속이다. 설레임과 걱정이 교차되는 기다림이 있기도 하고, 두려움과 답답함 가운데 기다려야 할 때도 있다. 그러나 그 기다림이 어떤 기다림이든지 그 기다림 속에는 반드시 미학이 숨겨져 있다. 기다림 속에서도 아름다움을 발견해내는 것이 곧 신앙 생활이고 믿음이기 때문이다. 

 

1) 빌라델비아 교회에 대한 칭찬은 적은 능력을 가지고서도 믿음을 지켰다는 것이다. 

· 우리는 무엇인가를 이루어 내려면 그야말로 뭔가가 있어야 한다고 생각한다. 그러나 실제로 빌라델비아는 참으로 보잘 것 없고 작은 도시였다. 또한 자연 환경이 아주 좋지 않은 곳이어서 지진이 자주 일어나는 도시였다. 따라서 재정적 형편도 매우 초라했을 것이 분명하다.        *현재 튀르키예의 알라셀

· 더구나 당시 빌라델비아 교회에는 주님의 명령을 지켜 그리스도의 이름에 합당한 삶을 살기가 참으로 어려운 영적인 현실에 처해 있었다. 복음을 방해하는 자들이 있었기 때문이다.(9절) 예수님으로 말미암는 구원의 은혜를 거부하고 예수님을 대적했던 유대인들이나 황제 숭배를 강요하면서 이것을 인정하지 않는 기독교인들을 핍박했던 로마정부였다        *지하 공동묘지 카타콤

· 그들은 이런 상황에서도 끝까지 믿음을 지켰다.(10절) 경제적으로 열악한 환경 속에서, 더구나 내부적으로든 외부적으로든 신앙의 핍박이 있는 상태에서 믿음을 지켜가려면 굳건한 믿음 가운데 견디어내지 않으면 안되었을 것이다.

 

2) 빌라델피아 교회가 칭찬 받았다고 하는 믿음은 결국 인내하는 믿음이었다. 

· 믿음과 가장 잘 통하는 단어가 있다면 그것은 인내일 것이다. 믿음은 어떤 상황에서도 하나님을 신뢰하는 마음으로 견디어 내는 것이다. 그리고 마침내 하나님의 때에 하나님께서 역사하시는 것을 경험하게 되는 것이다. 

· 그리스도인의 삶에도 때로는 앞이 캄캄하고 도무지 앞이 보이지 않는 답답한 시간들이 온다. 하나님께서 위대한 일을 위해 준비시키는 사람들은 거의 예외 없이 그런 답답한 과정을 통과했고 그 가운데 인내하는 믿음을 배우게 된다. 또한 그 시간들을 통해 하나님이 하시는 일에 대한 영적 시각을 갖게 된다. 하나님의 시각에서 세상과 사람을 바라보게 된다는 말이다.     *요셉이 두려워떠는 형들에게 한 말(창45:5,7,8)

· 결국 믿음은 인내하는 것인데, 그 과정에서 절대적으로 필요한 것은 약속의 말씀을 신뢰하는 것이다. 하나님께서 하시는 일이라면 될 것이라는 믿음이 우리로 하여금 어떤 상황 속에서도 말씀대로 지켜 행할 수 있게 한다. (롬8:24,25)

· 우리는 수시로 삶의 여건들을 핑계댄다. 건강이 좋지 않아서, 돈이 없고 시간이 없어서, 먹고 살기 바빠서, 하지 못한다고 말한다. 기다리지 못하겠다고 말한다. 그러나 우리가 상식적으로 생각하고 상식적인 수준으로 살면, 하나님도 우리에게 상식적으로만 역사하신다는 것을 알아야 한다.      *40년의 광야 생활 동안 만나만 먹게 하신 이유

 

3) 믿음의 인내는 여호와 이레의 하나님과 승리의 하나님을 경험하게 한다. 

·  ‘열린 문’은 하나님 나라에 들어가게 하는 문을 말하고, ‘다윗의 열쇠’는 그 문을 열 수 있게 하는 열쇠를 말한다. 그 열쇠는 예수님이 갖고 계시는데, 어려운 환경에서도 믿음의 인내를 가지고 말씀대로 사는 자들에게 주어진다.   *에스더가 죽기를 각오할 때 벌어진 일 

· 또한 하나님의 약속이 이루어지는 과정에서 복의 통로로 살고자 하는 자들에게 하나님이 주시는 약속은 하나님께서 친히 대적자들을 손보시겠다는 것이다. (창12:3) 하나님이 우리 편이 되어 주시면 우리를 대적할 자가 없다. 아무도 우리를 건드리지도 못한다. 또 이미 우리를 위해 자신의 가장 소중한 아들을 희생하신 분이시에 우리 삶에 정말 필요한 것이면 어떤 것이든 주실 수 있다.(롬8:32,33) 

*자신을 평생 괴롭혔던 사울 왕에 대한 다윗의 태도와 그 결과

· 지금 당장 적은 능력으로 살아가는 것은 힘이 든다. 사울 왕처럼 누군가가 계속해서 나를 힘들게 한다면 죽기 보다 힘들 수 있다. 그러나 우리에게는 주께서 우리 편이 되어 주셔서 핍박자를 우리 앞에 무릎 꿇게 하시고, 정말 필요한 것이라면 반드시 주시겠다는 약속이 있다.    *가시와 같은 육체의 연약함 때문에 바울이 얻게 된 유익(고후12:9,10)

· 부유한 환경이 내 삶을 반드시 풍요롭게 하지는 않는다. 풍부한 재정이 반드시 힘있는 교회를 만들지는 않는다. 바울 처럼, 빌라델피아 교회 처럼, 적은 능력으로도 오히려 주님만 바라보며 믿음으로 인내할 때 성전의 기둥이 된다. (12절)

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 빌라델피아 교회가 칭찬받았던 믿음은 어떤 믿음이었으며, 믿음의 인내가 가져다 주는 축복은 어떤 것들이 있는가?

2) 실제 나의 삶 속에서 믿음의 인내 가운데 경험하게 되었던 것들을 나누어보고, 현재 선교적 교회의 멤버로 선교적 삶을 살아가기 위해 어떤 인내가 필요한 지 나누어보자. 

The Aesthetics of Waiting (Revelation 3:7–10)

· Our lives are a continuous series of waiting. Sometimes we wait with anticipation and anxiety intertwined; at other times, we wait amidst fear and frustration. Yet whatever kind of waiting we experience, there is always hidden beauty in it. Discovering beauty even in waiting is what the life of faith is all about—because it reflects trust in God.

 

1) The Church in Philadelphia Was Praised for Keeping the Faith Despite Having Little Strength

· We often think that in order to accomplish something, we must have something significant to begin with. But in reality, Philadelphia was a small and unimpressive city. It was located in a region prone to frequent earthquakes, making it an unstable and undesirable place to live. Financially, it was clearly a poor city.   *Modern-day Alaşehir, Türkiye

· Furthermore, the church in Philadelphia was in a spiritually difficult environment where it was extremely hard to live a life worthy of Christ and keep the Lord’s commands. There were those who opposed the gospel (v.9). This included Jews who rejected the grace of salvation through Jesus and actively opposed Him, as well as the Roman government, which enforced emperor worship and persecuted Christians who refused to comply.    

*Catacombs: underground Christian burial sites

· Even in such circumstances, they remained faithful to the end (v.10). To preserve one’s faith under such economic hardship and internal and external persecution would have required firm, enduring faith.

 

2) The Faith for Which the Church in Philadelphia Was Praised Was Ultimately a Patient Faith

· If there’s one word most closely tied to faith, it is patience. Faith is enduring any circumstance while trusting God. And in doing so, one ultimately experiences God’s work in His perfect timing.

· In the life of a Christian, there are seasons of darkness and deep uncertainty. Almost without exception, those whom God prepares for great things must go through such challenging times, learning patient faith. Through these periods, we gain spiritual insight into the work of God—we begin to see the world and people from God's perspective.

· In the end, faith is about endurance. What is absolutely essential in that process is trusting in God’s promises. Believing that God will accomplish His work enables us to live according to His Word regardless of circumstances.(Romans 8:24–25)

· We often excuse ourselves from obedience by pointing to life’s conditions: poor health, lack of money, no time, being too busy. We say we cannot wait. But if we live only by what makes sense humanly, we must understand that God will also work in our lives only in ways that make sense humanly.

3) The Patience of Faith Leads to Encountering Jehovah Jireh and the God of Victory

· The "open door" refers to the door to the Kingdom of God, and the "key of David" refers to the key that opens that door. Jesus holds this key, and it is given to those who live according to His Word with faithful endurance even in difficult situations.

  *What happened when Esther resolved to face death

· For those who desire to live as channels of blessing during the fulfillment of God’s promises, God Himself promises to deal with their adversaries. (Genesis 12:3) If God is on our side, no one can stand against us. No one can even touch us. The One who already gave His most precious Son for us will surely give us whatever we truly need. (Romans 8:32–33)

  *David's attitude toward King Saul, who tormented him all his life, and the outcome

· Living with little strength is difficult. If someone like King Saul keeps troubling us, it might feel worse than death. But we have the promise that the Lord is on our side, that He will make our persecutors bow before us, and that He will surely give us what we truly need.

  *The benefit Paul gained from his "thorn in the flesh" – 2 Corinthians 12:9–10

· A wealthy environment does not guarantee a rich life. Abundant finances do not necessarily create a strong church. Like Paul and the church in Philadelphia, when we look only to the Lord and endure in faith even with little strength, we become pillars in the temple of God.
