영적 간음

 

 

 

 

 

 

영적 간음 계2:12-17

 

· 오늘날 우상 숭배 금지 명령은 불상에 절하지 말라는 정도가 아니라 마음 속에 하나님 이외의 다른 것들을 하나님 보다 더 신뢰하거나, 더 소중하게 생각하지 말라는 것이다. 다시 말하면 그리스도의 정결한 신부로 부름받은 우리들이 주님이 아닌 다른 어떤 것들을 더 사랑하는 영적 간음을 하지 않는 것이다.     *‘질투하시는 하나님’의 의미 

 

1) 버가모 교회는 순교의 각오로 믿음을 끝까지 지켰던 교회이다.  

· 버가모는 서머나의 북쪽으로 60마일쯤 되는 곳에 위치한 도시로  BC 130년 경에 로마의 식민지가 되었다. 문화적인 측면에서 소아시아의 중심부 역할을 했고, 유명한 의학교가 있었으며, 20만권의 책을 소장한 도서관이 있었고, 책을 만드는 양피지를 생산하는 곳이기도 했다. 

· 버가모 역시 우상 숭배가 심했던 곳으로 치료의 신으로 여겨졌던 '아에스쿨라피우스'라 불리는 뱀 신을 섬겼고, 주 신인 '제우스', 아테네의 신인 '디오니소스' 까지 섬겼다. 버가모를 ‘사단의 권좌가 있는 곳’이라 한 것은 그곳이 이방신을 숭배하는 중심지였다는 것을 말한다.

· 그러나 버가모 교인들은 버가모 교회의 감독이었고, 나중에 순교했던 안디바의 신앙을 본 받아 끝까지 신앙을 지켰다고 칭찬받는다.(13절)        *'굳게 잡는다(크라테이스)' = ‘끝까지 붙들다’ (현재 능동태)

 

2) 주님의 책망은 그들 중에 발람의 교훈을 지키는 자도 있었다는 것이다. 

· 거짓 선지자였던 발람은 모압 여인을 통해 이스라엘을 유혹하고, 이스라엘이 행음을 하게 함으로 수만 명이 하나님의 징계를 받아 죽게 만들었다. 버가모 교인들 중에도 이스라엘 백성들 처럼 우상 숭배와 행음에 동참했던 사람들이 있었다. 

· 아담의 타락 후 부패해진 인간의 심성은 보이지 않는 하나님에 대해 만족하지 않고, 대신 눈에 보이는 형상을 만들어 복을 구하는 대상으로 삼았다. 타락한 인간의 이기심이 형상화된 우상을 만들어 낸 것이다.          *새긴 우상(비실재적인 것을 형상화)과 형상(이미 형체를 가진 것을 형상화)

· 하나님은 애굽의 10가지 재앙을 통해서 인간들이 자신을 위해 숭배하는 어떠한 우상도 의미없는 것임을 보여주셨다. 자신들을 지켜 주기는 커녕 우상을 숭배하는 행위가 자신들을 더 고통스럽게 할 뿐이라는 것을 보여주셨다. 

· 오늘날 대표적인 우상은 자녀들이다. 만약 하나님보다 더 자녀들을 소중하게 생각하고, 자녀들의 유익을 위해서라면 신앙 생활도 기꺼이 양보할 수 있다고 생각한다면, 그것은 우상 숭배이며 영적 간음이다.     *한국의 고3, 고2 아이들의 주일 출석률이 절반으로 떨어지는 이유

· 자녀들에게 중요한 것은 당장 좋은 대학에 들어가도록 과외 활동 점수를 높이는 것이 아니라, 신앙 생활을 충실하게 함으로 성숙한 그리스도인이 되게 하는 일이다. 모든 사람을 크게 하심과 강하게 하심이 주의 손에 있기 때문이다.(대상29:12)

·  그리스도인들에게 있어서 예배는 삶의 시작이고 끝이다. 삶의 출발인 예배가 무너지면 그 다음은 기대할 것이 없게 된다. 좋은 점수를 얻게 하려고 중요한 예배를 빠지게 한다면, 그것은 아이들로 하여금 스스로 하나님께 쓰임 받을 길을 포기하게 만드는 것이다. 

·  또한 세상의 것들을 하나님 보다 더 좋아하는 것도 우상 숭배라 할 수 있다. 세상의 것들이 필요할 때가 있지만 그것들이 우리 삶의 목표가 되어서는 안된다. 하나님 보다 눈에 보이는 것들이 더 소중하게 생각되어 그것을 위해 살아간다면 영적 간음을 하는 것과 같다. 예수님이 우리를 위해 십자가에 죽으신 이유는 생명을 찾은 우리가 자신을 위해서만 살지 않고 예수님을 위해 살게 하기 위함이다.(고후5:15)

 

3) 영적 간음에 빠져 있는 자들을 치시겠지만 돌이키는 자에게는 감추어진 만나를 주실 것이다.

 · 버가모 교인들이 권면을 받아들이지 않을 때는 주께서 친히 검으로 그들을 치실 것이라 말씀한다. 주님을 소개할 때 ‘좌우에 날선 검’이라 하신 이유는(12절) 그 칼이 대적자들을 향해 쓰이기도 하지만, 반대로 자기 백성들을 향해서 쓰이기도 하기 때문이다. 

· 주님께서 자기 백성들을 향해 칼을 쓰시면 그 검을 막아낼 자가 없다. 심판의 궁극적 목적은 돌이키게 하고자 하는 일이지만 그 심판은 의사도 못 막고, 변호사도 못 막아낸다. 그러니 지혜로운 사람은 하나님께서 그 칼을 휘두르실 듯 하면 무조건 납작 엎드리는 사람이다.      *‘당랑거철’의 의미

· 감사한 것은 그 권면을 듣고 그대로 행하는 자에게는 감추어져 있던 만나를 주시겠다고 하셨다.(17절) 전승에 의하면 언약궤 안에 있었던 만나 항아리는 솔로몬의 성전이 파괴될 때 사라졌다고 하는데, 유대인들은 감추어져 있던 만나가 메시야 왕국에서 다시 공개될 것이라 믿고 있었다. 이 만나는 주님의 말씀을 듣고 영적 간음으로 부터 돌아서는 자에게 주어질 은혜를 말씀한 것이다.

·  어제까지 하나님 보다 세상을 더 사랑함으로 영적 간음에 빠져 있었다 할지라도, 오늘 생명의 말씀을 듣고 마음을 돌이키기로 결심한다면 숨겨져 있던 만나를 맛보게 될 것이다.

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 영적인 간음은 무엇을 말하는 것이며, 그것이 왜 죄가 되는 것인지, 그리고 그것에 대해 주님은 어떻게 하시겠다고 하셨는 지 말해보라. 

2) 나의 삶이 혹시 영적 간음 가운데 사는 삶은 아니었는 지 돌아보며 자신의 삶을 나누어보고, 주님의 경고의 메시지를 듣고 어떤 생각이 들었는 지 나누어보자. 

Spiritual Adultery (Revelation 2:12–17)

· Today, the command to avoid idolatry goes far beyond simply not bowing to statues like Buddha. It means not trusting in or valuing anything in your heart more than God. In other words, we who have been called to be the pure bride of Christ must not commit spiritual adultery by loving something more than the Lord.         *The meaning of "a jealous God"

 

1. The Church in Pergamum was one that held fast to the faith even to the point of martyrdom.

· Pergamum was located about 60 miles north of Smyrna and became a Roman colony around 130 B.C. Culturally, it served as a central hub of Asia Minor. It had a famous medical school, a library with 200,000 volumes, and was known for producing parchment used in bookmaking.

· Pergamum was also a place steeped in idolatry. It worshiped Asclepius, a serpent god thought to bring healing, along with other major deities like Zeus and Dionysus, the god of Athens. It is called “where Satan has his throne” because it was a center for pagan worship.

· However, the believers in Pergamum are commended for remaining faithful, even emulating the faith of Antipas, the church leader who was eventually martyred (v.13). *Hold fast (krateis) = cling to the end (present active tense)

 

2. The Lord’s rebuke was that some in the church held to the teaching of Balaam

· Balaam, a false prophet, enticed Israel to sin by using Moabite women, leading them into sexual immorality and idolatry, which brought God’s judgment and resulted in the death of thousands. Likewise, some in Pergamum participated in similar idolatry and sexual immorality.

· Since Adam’s fall, corrupted human nature has refused to be satisfied with the invisible God and instead created visible idols to pursue blessings. These idols were physical representations of human selfishness.  *“Graven images” refer to shaping what is not real; “likeness” refer to shaping what already has form.

· Through the ten plagues of Egypt, God demonstrated that all idols humans worship are ultimately meaningless. Not only can idols not protect their worshipers, but worshiping them only leads to more suffering.

· Today, one of the most common idols is children. If we value our children more than God, and are willing to compromise our faith for their benefit, that is idolatry—and spiritual adultery.  *One reason for the decline in church attendance among Korean high school juniors and seniors 

· What matters most for children is not gaining extracurricular points for college but becoming mature Christians through faithful worship and discipleship. “In Your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.” (1 Chronicles 29:12)

· For Christians, worship is the beginning and end of life. If the foundation of life—worship—is neglected, nothing else can be expected to go well. Skipping worship to improve grades teaches children to give up being used by God.

· Also, loving anything in this world more than God is idolatry. While worldly things are sometimes necessary, they must not become our life’s goal. If we cherish what is visible more than God and live for it, we are committing spiritual adultery. Christ died on the cross not so that we would live for ourselves, but so that we would live for Him who died and rose again for us (2 Corinthians 5:15)

 

3. Those who fall into spiritual adultery will be judged, but those who repent will receive the hidden manna.

· If the believers in Pergamum did not heed the Lord’s warning, He said He would fight against them with the sword of His mouth. When the Lord is introduced in verse 12 as the one “who has the sharp double-edged sword,” it signifies that this sword can be used both against His enemies and against His own people.

· When the Lord wields His sword against His people, no one can block it. The ultimate purpose of His judgment is to bring repentance, but no doctor or lawyer can stop that judgment. A wise person is one who falls flat before God when he sees that sword approaching.

 *The meaning of the phrase “a praying mantis trying to stop a chariot” 

· Thankfully, to those who listen and obey His warning, He promises to give the hidden manna (v.17). According to tradition, the jar of manna stored in the Ark of the Covenant disappeared when Solomon’s temple was destroyed. Jews believed this hidden manna would be revealed in the messianic kingdom. Here, the hidden manna represents the grace given to those who hear the Lord’s word and turn away from spiritual adultery.

 *The animation "The King of Kings" became a major hit for this reason

· Even if you were committing spiritual adultery by loving the world more than God until yesterday, if today you hear the word of life and decide to repent, you will taste the hidden manna.
