실상은 부요한 자Revelation 2:8–10

· 진정한 행복은 현재의 상황과 여건과는 상관없이 주어질 수 있는 것이다. 여건과 환경이 좋아지는 미래에 주어질 수 있는 것이 아니라 바로 지금 주어질 수 있다. 특별히 매 순간 선하신 뜻 가운데 우리의 삶을 인도해가시는 주님이 항상 함께 하시는 그리스도인들에게 있어서는 더더욱 그렇다. 

 

1) 서머나 교회는 환난과 핍박이 많았던 교회이다. 

· 향료의 집산지로 무역이 발달했고 호메로스가 태어난 곳이어서 학문이 많이 발전해 있었던 서머나는 세련되고 잘 사는 도시였지만 그곳에 사는 그리스도인들은 환난과 궁핍을 경험해야 했었다.(9절)         *‘환난’ = ‘무거운 물건 밑에서 눌려 부서지는 것’

·황제 숭배를 강요하는 로마 정부로 부터 많은 핍박을 당했고, 할례를 받은 자만이 하나님의 백성이라 생각했던 유대인들로 부터는 악독한 배반자라는 모함을 받았다. 또한 이런 핍박 때문에 당연히 경제적으로도 궁핍한 삶을 살 수 밖에 없었다.

2) 서머나 교회를 향해 주님은 그들이 실상은 부요한 자라고 말씀하신다. 

· 오늘날 그리스도인들도 이 땅에서 신앙 생활을 하는 과정에서 반드시 이런 고난을 겪게 된다.(롬8:17) 먼저는 살면서 짓는 죄나 잘못된 삶에 대한 깨달음을 주시기 위해 겪게 되는 것이다. 죄를 깨닫게 하시려고 주시는 징계를 통해 더욱 성숙한 그리스도인이 될 수 있기에 이 일이 영적으로는 부요한 자가 되는 것이다. 

· 죄 때문은 아니지만 환난과 궁핍을 통해 더욱 굳건한 믿음의 사람이 되게 하셔서 그들의 말과 행동을 통해 하나님이 영광 받으시는 일이 있기에 그들은 부요한 자이다. 환난과 궁핍이 오면 다 죽을 것 같은데, 여호와의 은혜로 살면 그 가운데서도 평강을 누릴 수 있고, 감사의 말을 하며, 하나님께 영광 돌리는 삶을 살아낼 수 있다. (신8:2,3)

    *신앙적으로 성숙한 분들의 공통점은 환난과 궁핍에 대한 경험 

· 환난과 궁핍 가운데서도 믿음을 지킨 자에게 주어지는 하늘 나라의 상급 때문에 그들은 실상은 부요한 자이다.(10절b) *면류관(스테파노스) = 경기 중 승리자에게 주어진 관

 

3) 환난과 궁핍 가운데 살 때 그 고난을 감당할 수 있게 하는 것은 믿음이다.

· 하나님이 주시는 고난은 하나님의 정하신 때가 되면 반드시 끝나게 되며, 그 동안에도 그 고난을 감당할 수 있도록 함께 하신다.        *십 일 = 정하신 기간

· 죽도록 충성하라는 말은 죽을 각오를 하고 믿음으로 버티라는 말이다. 실제로 환난을 견디어 낼 수 있는 방법은 믿음 밖에 없다. 그 믿음이란 ‘주님께서 나의 인생 전체를 책임지고 계시며, 나의 생명까지도 주관하시는 분이다’라는 것이다. 

· 주님을 소개할 때 요한은 ‘처음이며 마지막이신 이’ 라고 말씀한다.(8절) 이 말씀의 뜻은 모든 세상의 시작과 끝을 주관하시는 분이 주님이시라는 말이다. 얼듯보면 사람들이 세상 역사를 주관하는 듯 하지만 역사는 그분의 이야기이다.     *역사는 ‘His Story’

· 어떤 환난과 궁핍이 있어도 그것들이 어제나 오늘이나 동일하게 사랑하시는 하나님이 주관하시는 가운데 오는 것임을 굳게 믿을 때 걱정이나 두려움에 휩쌓여 있지 않을 수 있다.  돌이켜 감사의 말을 할 수 있고, 밝은 얼굴 빛으로 사람들을 상대할 수 있다. 이것이 실상은 부요한 자의 삶이다. 

· 또 요한은 예수님을 죽었다가 살아나신 이라고 소개한다.(8절) 사망을 이기시고 부활하신 주님께서는 우리에게도 그 부활의 은혜를 입게 하셨다.(고전15:20,21) 하나님의 은혜로 죽을 병에 걸렸다 살아나도  언젠가는 다시 죽는다. 그리고 무엇보다 우리에게는 죽으면 끝이 아니라 영원한 나라가 기다리고 있다. 이것을 묵상할 때 죽음에 대한 두려움도 없어진다. (히2:15)      *요한의 제자이고, 서머나 교회 감독이었던 폴리갑의 말

· 사탄은 오늘도 죽음을 가지고 우리를 위협한다. 일생에 메여 종노릇하게 한다. 그러나 그 메임에서 놓일 수 있는 길이 부활의 주님을 믿음으로 붙드는 것이다. 그리고 이것이 환난과 궁핍 속에서도 죽도록 충성하는 삶이다. 

· 먹고 사는 일, 살고 죽는 것 조차 주께 맡기고, 주의 나라를 위해 살고자 결단할 때 정말로 모든 것을 책임지는 주님을 경험하게 될 것이다. 말씀 들을 때, 기도할 때 생각나는 것이 있다면 ‘내가 망하고 흥하는 것도, 내가 살고 죽는 것도 주께서 하실 일인데, 내가 오늘 말씀 듣고 결단하며 주께 갑니다. 나를 받아주소서.’ 이렇게 결단해 보라. 

 

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 환난과 궁핍이 있는 서머나 교회를 부요한 자라고 말한 이유 세 가지를 말해보라. 

2) 환난과 궁핍을 견디어내고 이겨내기 위한 믿음은 어떤 믿음인 지 본문 8절을 통해 두 가지를 설명해보라.

3) 내 삶에 환난과 궁핍을 믿음으로 극복해 갈 수 있었던 삶의 간증이 있다면 나누어보라. 또한 현재 겪고 있는 문제들을 어떻게 이겨낼 수 있을 지 결단해보고 특별히 성령께서 생각나게 하셔서 결단한 것들을 나누어보자. 

Yet, You Are Rich  (Revelation 2:8–10)

 

· True happiness can be given regardless of one’s current situation or conditions. It is not something that only comes in a better future when circumstances improve; it can be given right now. This is especially true for Christians, for whom the Lord—who guides every moment of life according to His good and perfect will—is always present.

1) The Church in Smyrna Faced Tribulation and Persecution

· Smyrna was a wealthy and sophisticated city, known as a trade center for perfumes and the birthplace of Homer, which contributed to its flourishing scholarly culture. However, Christians living there had to endure tribulation and poverty (v.9).

*“Tribulation” refers to being crushed under a heavy burden.

· They suffered greatly under the Roman government, which enforced emperor worship, and were slandered by Jews who believed only the circumcised could be God’s people. These Christians were falsely accused of being vile traitors. As a result of such persecution, they inevitably lived in economic poverty.  *Think of the underground churches in North Korea today, enduring hardship and poverty.

2) Yet the Lord Says They Are Rich

·  Christians today also inevitably go through suffering as part of their faith journey (Romans 8:17). Sometimes this suffering is to help us recognize our sin or wrong ways. Through God's discipline, we become more mature and thus spiritually rich.

·  Even when suffering isn't caused by sin, God uses trials and poverty to strengthen our faith, and through our words and actions, He receives glory. When trials hit and we feel like we might die, by the grace of God we can still have peace, give thanks, and live lives that glorify Him (Deut. 8:2–3).    *A common trait among spiritually mature people is their experience with trials and hardship.

·  Those who remain faithful through tribulation and poverty will receive a heavenly reward (v.10b).  *The "crown" (stephanos) is the laurel wreath given to the victor in a race.

3) Faith is What Enables Us to Endure Hardship and Poverty

·  Any suffering given by God has a set time and will come to an end. Even during that period, God remains with us to help us endure it.

*“Ten days” represents a set time.

· “Be faithful even to the point of death” means to hold firm in faith, ready to face death. The only way to endure real tribulation is through faith—the kind of faith that trusts the Lord is in charge of our entire life, even our very breath.

·  When John introduces the Lord, he calls Him “the First and the Last” (v.8). This means that the Lord governs the beginning and the end of all things. Though it may seem like humans control the flow of history, it is ultimately His story.

·  When we believe that even our suffering comes under the loving sovereignty of the unchanging God, we are not overcome with fear or anxiety. We can instead speak words of gratitude and shine with hope before others. That is the life of someone who is, in truth, rich.

·  John also introduces Jesus as “the One who died and came to life again” (v.8). The resurrected Lord defeated death and gives us the grace of resurrection (1 Cor. 15:20–21). Even if we are healed from a terminal illness, we will still eventually die, but we have the promise of an eternal kingdom beyond this life. When we reflect on this, fear of death fades away (Heb. 2:15).    *Polycarp, a disciple of John and bishop of the Smyrna church, also testified to this truth.

·  Even today, Satan tries to threaten us with death, binding us in lifelong slavery to fear. But the only way to be freed is by holding firmly to the resurrected Christ. This is what it means to live faithfully—even to the point of death—amid tribulation and poverty.

·  When we entrust even our basic needs and very lives to the Lord and decide to live for His kingdom, we will surely experience the Lord who takes full responsibility for us. If something comes to your heart as you hear God’s Word or pray, say this: “Whether I rise or fall, live or die, it is in the Lord’s hands. But today, I come to You, responding to Your Word. Receive me, Lord.”

2) From verse 8, explain two aspects of the faith needed to endure and overcome tribulation and poverty.

3) Share a testimony of a time you overcame hardship and poverty through faith. Also, reflect on how you can overcome your current struggles, and share any resolutions that the Holy Spirit has led you to.
