위대한 동역자들 (롬16:1-5,7)

 

·미국 사람들은 칭찬과 격려를 많이 하지만 한국 사람들은 칭찬과 격려에 인색하다. 체면과 형식을 중요시하는 유교적인 환경 속에서 자라왔기 때문일 것이다.

·미국에 이민 온 지 수 십년이 지났어도 원칙과 원리에 따라 일하는 법은 배웠으면서 그 과정에서 격려하고 칭찬하는 법은 잘 배우지 못하는 경우가 많다. 그러다 보니 유난히 한인 교회 안에는 다툼과 갈등이 많다. 서로 격려하고 칭찬하는 부분이 약하기 때문이다.   

 

1) 바울은 동역자들의 이름을 일일이 거명하고 그들의 수고를 기록하고 있다.  

·우리는 종종 누구나 그 정도의 수고는 하는 것이고, 또 어떤 면에서는 그렇게 수고하는 것이 당연한 일이라고 생각하기 때문에 칭찬과 격려를 잘 하지 못한다. 

·뻔히 다 알고 있는 사실 일지라도 굳이 격려하고 칭찬해줄 때 더 힘을 내어서 일할 수 있다. 서로 격려해주고 칭찬해줄 때 사실은 공동체의 분위기가 살아난다.

·마땅히 할 일 하는 것이라 생각하고 격려하고 칭찬해주는 일을 소홀히 하면, 결국 공동체는 문제가 생긴다. 인간의 연약함 때문에 어느 순간 시험 들고, 갈등하게 되기 때문이다.

 

2) 겐그레아 교회의 뵈뵈는 바울과 모든 교인들에게 도움이 되었던 자매였다. 

·바울은 겐그레아 교회 출신의 뵈뵈 자매를 로마서를 전달하는 전달자로 세웠다.(2절) 편지 전달자로 바울은 고린도 교인을 세울 수도 있었을 텐데 굳이 겐그레아의 뵈뵈 자매를 세운 것은 그 만큼 바울이 뵈뵈 자매를 신뢰했다는 말이다. 

·뵈뵈는 바울뿐 아니라 고린도 교회의 많은 교인들에게 큰 도움이 되었던 사람이다. 이것은 당시 뵈뵈가 있었던 겐그레아가 소아시아 무역의 중심지였다는 것을 통해서도 추측해볼 수 있다. 하나님의 나라는 이런 헌신된 동역자들에 의해 이루어져 간다.  

·그러나 하나님의 나라를 위해 살기로 결단해도 곧 바로 좋은 일들만 있지는 않다. 오히려 어떤 환경 속에서도 철저히 주님만 바라보며 흔들림 없이 헌신할 수 있도록 낮추시는 시간들이 있다. 그러나 그 가운데서도 기억해야 할 것은 하나님은 결코 굶주리게 하시지는 않으며 끝까지 지켜주신다는 것이다.(신8:2,3,4)   *(주)본 죽의 최복이 권사의 헌신의 과정 

 

3) 브리스길라와 아굴라는 바울과 평생 함께 했던 충성스러운 동역자였으며 자신의 집을 예배 장소로 내어놓았던 사람들이다.  

·그들은 바울과 함께 장막을 만드는 일을 하고, 또 회당에 나가 유대인들이나 헬라인들을 가르치기도 했다. 그들은 바울이 고린도를 떠나 에베소로 갈 때도 그와 함께 갔다. 그들은 바울을 위해 자기들의 목이라도 내어놓을 정도의 사람들이었다. 

·브리스가와 아굴라는 또 예배 장소를 위해 자신의 집을 내어놓은 사람들이다.(5절) 그 당시의 교회는 대부분 가정 교회였다. 누군가가 자기 집을 예배 장소로 내어놓으면 그곳에서 사람들이 모여 예배를 보았다.     *중국 가정 교회 지도자들의 헌신

 

4) 안드로니고와 유니아는 사도들도 존중히 여겨던 신앙의 인격자들이었다. 

·안드로니고와 유니아는 바울보다도 먼저 예수님을 알았고 더구나 사도들에게도 존중히 여김을 받는 자라고 말한다.      *힘든 환경 속에서도 항상 감사하시는 권사님 

·진정한 믿음은 어설픈 사람 안에서도 지금도 역사하고 계시는 주님을 보는 것이다. 악한 사람을 보는 것이 아니라 그 악한 사람에게도 임하셔서 사람을 바꾸어놓고, 그 악했던 사람을 통해 세상을 뒤집어 놓으실 수 있는 주님을 바라보는 것이다. 

·그리고 그렇게 주님을 바라보며 약속의 말씀을 굳게 붙들 때 어떤 절망적인 상황에서도 걱정하지 않을 수 있고, 두려워하지 않을 수 있고, 분노하지 않을 수 있다. 그리고 비로서 감사의 말을 할 수 있다.

·하나님과 함께 고난의 시간을 보낼 때 그 분은 자신과의 관계를 전혀 새로운 차원으로 이끄신다. 그것은 어떤 상황에서도 끝까지 하나님을 향한 신뢰를 버리지 않으며 오직 약속의 말씀만을 붙들게 하시는 것이다. 

·시대를 바꿀 수 있었던 사람들은 똑똑한 사람들이 아니었다. 어떤 상황에서도 먼저는 주님의 일하심을 믿고, 그렇기에 결코 실망하거나 좌절하지 않는 사람들이었다. 그래서 오히려 약한 자를 격려하고, 핍박하는 자들을 축복하는 자들이었다. 이런 신앙의 인격은 어떤 상황에서도 우리 안에 계시는 주님이 일하고 계시다는 것을 끝까지 신뢰할 때만이 나타날 수 있다.          *케네스 배 선교사님의 간증

 

학습 및 적용 문제:

1) 바울이 본문에서 소개한 사람들의 수고와 헌신에 대해 말해보라. 

2) 안드로니고와 유니아는 사도들에게도 인정받는 믿음을 가진 자였다. 진정한 믿음은 어떤 믿음인가?

3) 바울의 동역자들의 모습을 보면서 나는 과연 하나님의 동역자로 잘 살아가고 있는 지  자신들의 삶을 돌아보는 가운데 부족했던 부분들과 결단했던 부분들을 나누어보자.

Great Fellow Workers (Romans 16:1–5, 7)

·Americans often give compliments and encouragement, while Koreans tend to be reserved in offering praise or affirmation. This may stem from growing up in a Confucian environment that values appearances and formality.

·Even after decades of living in the U.S., many Korean immigrants have learned to work by principles and systems, but often haven't learned how to encourage and compliment others well. As a result, Korean churches, in particular, experience frequent conflicts and disputes—largely due to a lack of encouragement and affirmation.

1) Paul mentioned his co-workers by name and recorded their efforts.

·We often think that a certain level of effort is just expected or normal, and therefore we don't easily offer praise or encouragement.

·But even if something is obvious to everyone, when we choose to affirm and encourage someone, it gives them strength to carry on. When we encourage and uplift one another, it brings life into the community.

·If we neglect to appreciate and affirm others simply because they’re doing what they should be doing, it eventually leads to problems in the community. Because of human weakness, people may become discouraged or fall into conflict.

2) Phoebe of the church in Cenchreae was a sister who was a great help to Paul and all the believers.

·Paul entrusted Phoebe, a member of the Cenchrean church, to deliver his letter to the Romans (v.2). He could have chosen a Corinthian believer, but deliberately chose Phoebe—this shows how much he trusted her.

·Phoebe had been a great help not only to Paul but also to many others in the Corinthian church. This is understandable considering that Cenchreae was a major center of trade in Asia Minor at the time. The kingdom of God advances through the service of such dedicated co-workers.

·However, even if one decides to live for God's kingdom, that doesn’t guarantee an easy path. There are seasons when God humbles us so we can remain devoted to Him alone, regardless of circumstances. Yet we must remember this: God never lets us starve, and He watches over us until the end (Deut. 8:2–4). *Deaconess Choi Bok-yi's life of dedication

3) Priscilla and Aquila were faithful co-workers who worked with Paul throughout his life and even opened their home as a place of worship.

·They worked as tentmakers with Paul and taught both Jews and Greeks in the synagogues. When Paul left Corinth for Ephesus, they traveled with him. They were the kind of people who would have laid down their lives for Paul.

·Priscilla and Aquila opened their home for worship gatherings (v.5). At the time, most churches were house churches. When someone opened their home, that space became a place where believers gathered for worship.   *Chinese house church leaders’ devotion

4) Andronicus and Junia were respected by the apostles and were considered people of deep spiritual character.

·Paul says Andronicus and Junia came to know Christ even before he did, and were highly esteemed by the apostles. *A deaconess who always gives thanks despite difficult circumstances

·True faith is seeing the Lord at work even in people who seem immature or flawed. It means not focusing on someone’s evil, but believing that the Lord can come upon even such a person, transform them, and use them to change the world.

·When we look to the Lord like that and hold firmly to His promises, we can overcome despair without worry, fear, or anger. Only then can we offer words of gratitude.

·When we go through suffering with God, He brings us into a completely new depth of relationship with Him. He trains us to trust in Him alone and cling only to His promises—no matter the situation.

·The people who have changed history weren’t necessarily the smartest. They were the ones who, in every situation, believed God was at work and therefore never gave in to despair or discouragement. Instead, they encouraged the weak and blessed those who persecuted them. This kind of spiritual character only emerges when we completely trust that the Lord who lives within us is still working. *Testimony of missionary Kenneth Bae

 

Study and Application Questions:

1) Talk about the efforts and dedication of the people Paul introduced in the passage.

2) Andronicus and Junia were acknowledged by the apostles for their faith. What is true faith?

3) Looking at the lives of Paul’s co-workers, examine whether you are living as a faithful co-worker of God. Share areas where you’ve felt lacking, as well as any decisions or commitments you’ve made.
