(4) Being Rooted IN Christ
(Colossians 2:6-23)
Rev. Brian Lee
I. Living with the Fullness of Christ (Tree Analogy)
Being Rooted (Root)
Built up IN Him (Trunk)
Strengthened IN Faith (Branches)
Overflowing with Thankfulness (Fruit)
II. Warning against Christ-less Theology
Philosophy based on human tradition
Submission to legalistic principles (v. 20)
Lost connection with the head (v. 19)
III. The Difference (v. 23)
Idea and Knowledge without Relationship and Experience (Appearance of Wisdom)
Emphasis on self righteousness rather than faith and dependence upon Jesus Christ (Self imposed worship)
Substituting regulation of self denial for self transformation by the grace of God (False humility that lacks any value in restraining sensual indulgence)
IV. Conclusion & Application
We grow only as we get our nourishment and strength FROM GOD. How can you better nourish yourself for spiritual growth?
We were made alive IN HIM therefore we must continue to live IN HIM. What does it mean for you to continue to live IN Him?
Religious practices are beneficial for one’s spiritual growth but the real freedom (v. 23) and Spiritual Fullness (v. 10) is IN Christ.
