(50) Do What You’re Supposed to Do
(John 21:1-22)
Rev. Neil Kim
I. Going back to the former way of life is not an answer (vv.1-3)
Peter seems to be giving up his ministry and going back to what he knew best, the former trade, fishing.
Once you’re in Christ, you can’t go back to your old way of life anymore.
II. Jesus reaches out to Peter first (vv.4-5)
It was Peter who denied Jesus and ran away to save his own life. Yet, we find Jesus reaching out to Peter.
When you are so consumed by issues or problems on hand, you can’t hear God even if He is speaking to you.
III. Jesus is testing Peter’s faith (vv.6-7)
Peter and other disciples fished all night and caught nothing. They were about to quit fishing.
God will wait for you until you give up trying to do it yourself.
IV. Jesus serves His disciples again (vv.8-14)
Jesus prepares and serves breakfast to the disciples. Again, He was demonstrating and reminding his disciples that He came not to be served but to serve.
Kingdom economy: Give yours away first, then God will bless you.
V. Jesus restores Peter (vv.15-17)
Jesus has a different way of forgiving, restoring and reconciling people.
Jesus was asking Peter, “Do you Agape me?” But Peter kept answering, “I Phileo you.”
VI. Do what you’re supposed to do (vv.18-22)
Jesus says to Peter about the plan of his life. (vv.18-19)
But rather than listening to Jesus, Peter was more concerned about others. (vv.20-21)
Jesus says to Peter not to worry about others, and focus on what he’s supposed to do. (v.22)
VII. Applications:
Have you ever felt that you failed God? How did you deal with it?
Have you ever been guilty of comparing yourself with others? How did you feel?
