(44) Will You Really Lay Down Your Life For Him

(John 13:1-17)

I. Judas’ Betrayal 

Fulfillment of the scripture (v. 18)

Jesus was troubled (v. 21)

None of the disciples knew (v. 22)

II. Peter’s Denial 

Emphatic “Prideful” Declaration

I will lay down my life for you (v. 37)

Why can’t I follow you now?

Even if ALL fall away , I never will (Mt. 26:33, Mark 14:29-31)

Jesus’ prayer for Peter (Luke 22:31-32)

Humbling response from Jesus (v. 38)

III. Jesus Prepares the disciples for what’s to come

So that they will believe when it does happen (v. 18)

Strengthen his children’s doubts before he leaves his “children” (v. 33) 

You will ALL fall away (Mt 26:31)

A New Command (vv. 34-35)

IV. Challenge & Encouragement for us  

Will you really lay down your life for me? (v. 38)

You cannot follow now, but you WILL follow later.

V. Application 

Pray for a strong faith that won't lead you into betrayal when times are tough.

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers" (1 Jn 3:16). In what practical ways can you exhibit this sacrificial love? 

Jesus asks us the same question he asked Peter, “Will you REALLY lay down your life for me?” What will your honest answer be?
