선교의 동역자 여러분들께 문안합니다.

적도의 태양에 익숙해 있는 저희에게 이곳(미국 미시간)의 추위는 가히 위협적입니다. 세상이 온통 냉동실 같군요. 뼈 속을 파고드는 찬 기운에 문 밖에만 나서면 종종 걸음으로 뛰는 것이 습관이 되었습니다. 그런 중에도 하얗고 소담스런 눈이 좋아 봄을 재촉하는 마음이 덜한가 봅니다. 예년에 비해 따뜻하다는 겨울을 지나면서도 춥다고 엄살부리는 저희들은 여전히 ‘우간다 촌사람’이라는 놀림을 면치 못하고 있답니다.

캘빈(Calvin Theological Seminary)에서의 두 번째 학기도 마무리 되어 갑니다. 어리벙벙하게 정신이 없었던 첫 학기에 비해 이제는 제법 여유가 생겨 학업 외에도 학교의 여러 활동들에 참여하고 있습니다. 특히, 지난 1월에는 신학교 합창단의 일원으로 캐나다의 교회와 기관들을 순회하는 기회도 가졌습니다. 청교도와 개혁신학 전통, 그리고 북미인들의 신앙을 확인하고 배우는 유익한 시간이었지요. 책과 사람들, 공기처럼 익숙해져 있는 서구인들의 관습들, 그리고 미국교회와 한국 이민 교회의 목회 현장들을 접하면서 이 시대의 교회와 성도들의 사명에 대한 도전을 새롭게 하고 있습니다. 시간과 공간의 한계를 초월하신 하나님을 섬기면서도 시간과 공간의 한계에 얽매여 있는 편협된 우리의 시각에 경종을 울려봅니다.

미국은 오랫동안 다양한 문화와 인종이 섞여있으면서 정통 백인들과 소수민족들간의 긴장이 중요한 사회적 논쟁이 되어 왔고, 소수민족에 대한 우호적/차별적인 태도의 대조가 사회 곳곳에서 느껴집니다. 유학의 꿈을 이루어 고국에서 부러움과 환송을 받으며 미국에 도착한 많은 유학생들이 미국에서 겪는 충격은 언어와 문화의 장벽뿐 만 아니라 소수 민족에 대한 냉대와 차별주의의 뼈저린 경험입니다. 유학생들이 모여 대화하면서 자유와 평등의 땅이라는 미국의 교회와 사회 곳곳에서 인종 차별 주의적인 태도들이 만연해 있음에 종종 격분하곤 합니다. 흥미로운 것은, 그래도(!!) 한국에서 외국인 근로자들에 대해 차별과 불평등한 대우를 하는 것에 비하면 미국인들은 정말 관대하고 신사적이라고 결론을 내린다는 것입니다. 한국이나 미국이나 아프리카나 인종, 언어, 문화, 사회계층, 빈부의 경계를 넘어서, 예수님과 복음으로 인해 교회 안의 모든 다양한 사람들이 진정한 가족이 되어야 합니다!!!

쉴 틈 없는 배움과 도전을 통해 영적인 재충전을 허락하신 주님의 은혜가 얼마나 감사한지요. 우간다 교회의 문제는 ‘교회의 부재’가 아니라 ‘목회자 훈련의 부재’라고 진단할 수 있듯이, 선교사의 재교육과 훈련은 올바른 선교를 위한 선택이 아니라 필수가 되어야 함을 절감하고 있습니다. 부디 저희의 배움과 훈련이 차기 사역을 위한 바람직한 방향과 도구가 될 수 있도록 기도해 주십시오.

이역 만리 이 미국 땅에서 우간다 개혁신학교의 제자를 만났습니다. ‘아이작 아두다(Isaac Aduda)’라는 케냐 출신의 형제인데, 지난 1998년 우간다 개혁 신학교를 졸업하고 이곳 미국으로 유학을 왔다고 합니다. 아프리카에서 미국으로 유학오기도 쉽지 않지만, 이 넓은 미국 땅 한 귀퉁이에서 제자를 만나다니… 얼마나 반갑던지요. 한참을 얼싸안고 반가움을 나누었습니다. 아내와 제가 각각 가르쳤던 수업들, 캠퍼스 모습, 동창들에 대한 소식, 음악학교 연주회를 비롯한 학교 생활들에 대한 추억들, 무엇보다 개혁 신학교에서의 영성 훈련이 가장 소중한 자양분이었다는 고백 등을 나누면서 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다. 아이작은 앞으로 캘빈 대학(Calvin College)에서 ‘도시개발’을 공부한 후 아프리카로 돌아갈 계획이라고 합니다. 학비 조달을 위해 일하면서 공부하느라 힘들어 보였지만, 노동과 자립의 의미를 배우는 유익한 기회가 되리라 믿으며 아이작 형제의 길을 축복했습니다.

오는 2월 23일은 우간다에서 대통령 선거가 있는 날입니다. 우간다는 현 대통령이 집권해 온 지난 20여 년간 정치, 경제적으로 안정과 성장을 이루었습니다. 문제는 현 대통령의 집권이 장기화 되면서 진보적인 사회단체들의 반감이 증대되는 반면, 현 대통령을 대신할 적절한 지도자가 없다는 것입니다. 아프리카의 정치 상황은 개인 지도자 변화에 결정적인 영향을 받는 것이 특징입니다. 현 대통령이 재선될 경우 장기 집권에 대한 반대 세력의 움직임이 만만치 않고, 현 대통령이 아닌 후보들 중 누군가가 당선될 경우 지도력이나 역량을 신뢰할 수 없는데다 현 정권이나 군부의 불승복 등이 우려된다는 것이 현지의 예측입니다. 누가 당선되던지 한차례 정치적 소용돌이를 면키 어려울 것이라는 겁니다. 이를 위해 기도해 주세요.

아이들은 타문화 경험을 하면서 열심히 생활하고 있습니다. 아프리카와 한국, 그리고 미국에서 의젓하게 적응하고 공부하는 아이들에게 감사한 마음이 있습니다. 아쉬움이 있다면 대부분의 시간을 한국이 아닌 땅에서 보내어 모국에 대한 소속감이 약한 것 이지요. 그래서 지난번 월드컵처럼 이번 월드컵에서도 함께 응원하며 조국에 대한 소속감을 가슴에 느낄 수 있기를 기대한답니다.

저희들의 남아 있는 안식년 기간도 주님 손에 맡깁니다. 필요한 배움과 도전과 충전을 주실 때마다 진지하고 겸손하게 최선을 다하려 합니다. 우리의 기대보다 넘치도록 풍성하신 주님의 긍휼하심과 인도하심이 동역자님들과 함께 하시길 기도합니다.
