Summer of Service

2006

A High School Summer Volunteer Program

You are invited to join Volunteer Services in launching the second annual Summer of Service, a high school summer volunteer program at the National Office.  This summer, in partnership with Volunteer Managers, Prison Fellowship will offer volunteer opportunities appropriate for high school students entering 10th, 11th, and 12th grade.

The Goals of the Summer of Service Volunteer Program:

To engage youth in both service to their community and to the Kingdom
To give students a better understanding of Prison Fellowship and its ministries of reconciliation and transformation
To encourage students to remain involved with Prison Fellowship throughout the rest of their schooling and into their adult lives

About Summer of Service:

The program will run from June 21, 2006 – August 18, 2006
Students considered for the program must have completed the 9th grade
Students will be asked to commit a minimum of 8 hours per week and a maximum of 25 hours per week (hours will vary depending on opportunity)
All interested students will go through the volunteer application and interview process before being accepted into the program and will be required to sign the Prison Fellowship Statement of Faith
Volunteer Managers must plan to be present and actively involved with their high school volunteer throughout their time in the office
Volunteers will receive a half day of general orientation hosted by Volunteer Services on Wednesday, June 21, 2006
Students will be required to be part of a bi-weekly bible study hosted by Volunteer Services which will be scheduled during their lunch time
A recognition event will be held at the end of the summer for the students

Benefits to Students:

Gain practical office skills and work experience in a professional environment
Work with professional staff and college interns
Develop interpersonal skills
Learn about Prison Fellowship and how a non-profit ministry operates
Opportunity to deepen their faith by participating in devotions and Bible Studies
Knowledge that they are making a difference with their summer

Benefits to Volunteer Managers:

Maximize resources:  Student volunteers can be that extra set of hands you need
Program exposure: Student volunteers provide a direct connection to the community and link your program to potential adult volunteers and supporters (their parents!)
Re-energize your program: Student volunteers bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to your program.  The many talents and creativity that youth can bring to your program will enhance and strengthen the services you currently provide.

To participate interested Volunteer Managers should:

Complete a Summer of Service Volunteer Position Description and return to Volunteer Services by April 7, 2006
Ensure that the position description is clear, challenging and realistic
Ensure that your schedule will allow you to be present during the days/times that the student volunteer would be working with you throughout the summer
Be available to conduct an interview with prospective students before the chosen student is accepted into the program

Please do not hesitate to contact me at rebecca_whittler@pfm.org  or at ext. 8440 should you have any questions or would like ideas on how you can involve student volunteers in your program this summer.  Thank you for your support of the 2006 Summer of Service High School Summer Volunteer Program!
